[request] Needed: lightbox-style article-image picker
OK, this one is long overdue…
I’m willing to sponsor the development of a nice visual article image picker that would behave in the following way.
- Add an “add image” group to the left side of the write page, similar to bas_img_select
- This would contain a category select for specifying an image category from the list
- On release, a lightbox style pane would cover the screen in a semi-opaque manner
- This would contain smallish (75px square) cropped thumbnails of all the images in that category
- With a mechanism for overflow
- And optionally a multi-select capability
- Click on an add button to add image(s) to article image field.
- [edit] it should also show the currently associated image(s) if present as thumbs.
I’ll pledge $100 to make this happen, and hopefully others will consider this idea useful enough to jump in and pledge as well.
Dev-Bait currently ($250 USD)
- mrdale $100
- lee $50
- renobird $50
- masa $50

Just chimed in to point to some resources (that is, already written code) that could make this task easier for the brave man/woman who has the guts.
wet_quicklink: a kind of lightbox for inserting links on articles. It would be pretty cool if TXP core itself provides built-in way of creating “jquery ajaxy widgets” which plugins could re-utilize without re-inventing the wheel.
upm_image_popper: it’s like the old fashion way of doing what mrdale is asking. A pop up window with already uploaded images and many ways of insert it on the article body or appended/attached as artice images.

- too much info in the picker
- page reloads in a popup or a tab (firefox)
I envision a really simple, direct and intuitive scenario, that keeps semi-visible the page you’re working on and returns you to it when the task is done.

Dale,
Are thinking of a thickbox like approach?
(see towards the bottom: Ajax Content > Demos > Scrolling Content)
That would be pretty amazing.

yep I guess scrolling would be simpler than paging.

Going out on a limb here…
I vote we attempt to recruit Hakjoon.
He did a great tutorial on the squared eye site using jquery to submit forms via ajax. I feel like he’d do a great job with this….Not that there aren’t a ton of other folks who do great work as well…just thought I’d throw my vote out there.

I’m not easily distracted…hey, look a penny.
And that cloud looks like a monkey.
Back in a while, I think I hear the ice cream truck.
And then my dog ate my badger, and the love was lost.

I have no problems with the picker opening in a popup window. Actually I prefer that as I have noticed that a lot of people struggle with those lightbox thingies: they hit the browser’s back button to get out of them leading to frustration.
I agree regarding the information overload in upm. The most used options in my experience are those in the two Insert columns seeing that it’s an image insertion tool. As far as I’m concerned the following could all be removed or made optional via a preference setting:
Edit, Date, Preview, Author
If upm_image_popper could be combined with Steve’s lam_browse_by it would be perfect.

Glad upm works for you and thanks for your input.
Perhaps you could twist steve’s arm and have him do a “browse by” hack to upm_image_popper. Sounds like a good idea…
I’m actually after something far simpler and more visually oriented because a lot of my users are frustrated by unnecessary complexity…
