Sort Value basics

Can’t find this discussed anywhere.

What are the proper terms needed to operate the sort value, such as in the field “Sort Value” on the links page in the back end?

Thanks,

Re: Sort Value basics

If you leave the Sort value field empty, it will be filled with the Title field’s value. And if you don’t use the sort attribute in txp:linklist it will use the Sort value field to sort the link list (default is sort="linksort asc").

Re: Sort Value basics

françois,

Thx. That gets me somewhere.

Els,

Thanks, also. However, in the links page in the back end, when I put “id” in the Sort Value for every link, they don’t come up in ID order. Instead it is 1,7,4,6,8 (there is no ID 2 or 3, I deleted them). Is that because they could be in different categories, or does “id” override things like that?

Re: Sort Value basics

Putting “ID” (literally) in the sort field has no use. The easiest way to sort links on the linklist is to put numbers in it or leave it as is. If you use hundred-values for numbering (i.e. 100, 200, etc.) there are enough places to insert new links inbetween existing ones or change positions without renumbering every single link.

Re: Sort Value basics

Sorry if I wasn’t clear enough. The Sort value field is meant, like uli already explained, to be able to customize the sort order. If you want to sort by id, just use <txp:linklist sort="id asc" /> (or id desc). See TextBook.

Re: Sort Value basics

Thanks, Els and Uli. I think I’m catching on. I’ll be playing around with your suggestions shortly.

You didn’t realize, I’m sure, that you were dealing with a real TextPattern dummie here. Love the platform.
