User / Author permissions

I have some occasional writers that i want to give logins to, but the standard author presets don’t really work. I have learned to change the standard author permissions via modifying admin_config.php, but the options available there don’t cover what I believe is needed.

The problem:

Lets say the standard “Staff Writer” author setting is used. It allows:

  • can manage own articles, view other users’ articles
  • can manage images and files

Our site has hundreds (thousands) of articles, images and files. I would like the writer to be able to:

  • manage their own articles
  • view their own articles (not ALL the articles)
  • manage and view their images and files (again, not ALL)
  • limit posting to a specific section(s)

This would make life far less confusing for these occasional writers, plus prevent the possibility of images, files, etc being mistakenly deleted. Even by modifying admin_config.php, I still am limited to the user either being able to list NO articles, or every article on the site.

I haven’t found a plug-in that can help with this. I’m open to ideas, hacks, etc. Textpattern has been great for our site…

Re: User / Author permissions

Thank you – it is helpful. And a bit scary – anyone got this hack running OK on 4.06?

From the linked thread I gather many others seek the same capability. Is this a likely part of core Textpattern in the future?

Re: User / Author permissions

I’m sorry I can’t help you here. I never tried it, I only remembered there was a discussion about this.
I’ hope someone else can give a better advice

Re: User / Author permissions

Due to the totally unnecessary changes that patch makes to txp_auth.php, I’d seriously recommend against applying this patch.

Here’s a plugin (not hack) that I wrote a while back: http://forum.textpattern.com/viewtopic.php?id=25876

Re: User / Author permissions

Thank you Amit! I loaded the plug-in, and it works fine on limiting the articles to the user login. While not the whole list of needs, you have covered perhaps the most important.

If that code could be tweaked to work on images too I’d smile even more.

I love Textpattern and its flexibility and power. This area does seem to be a real limitation that needs addressing at some point. Amit’s plug-in is an easy to use start.
