Re: why is Textpattern Resources not being used?

I’m not nearly as bothered by the current situation as some people seem to be, but I admit it’s not optimal.

The WordPress folks have an official public-facing plugin repository now — something that was badly needed for a long time. Looking at how the WordPress community solved the problem of a centralized plugin library might be instructive.

I would second the creation of a plugin repository but what happens to plugins which are not supported anymore by their developers but they can still function after minor modifications by the community?

Re: why is Textpattern Resources not being used?

If a plugin is no longer supported, the original author can hand over maintenance to a community member.

Re: why is Textpattern Resources not being used?

The problem seems that sometimes people just move on and don’t seem to care what becomes of their work. To me it’s often not clear whether a certain plugin is still being maintained or not, and if in doubt, I’d rather not use it for my project.

Someone once suggested listing all abandoned plugins in a central location for others to adopt, which I thought was a good idea.

Re: why is Textpattern Resources not being used?

TXP.org does already have a option to show which plugins are gone or no longer maintained, I think.

Not exactly the same thing, but Txp Resources has started flagging plugins that don’t work with the current release or that have broken links in their entries on the site. You can find a list here.

Re: why is Textpattern Resources not being used?

what do you think of a table similar to this?

plugin name version original author current author min txp requirements textpattern resources url forum url Latest update download link
abc_plugin 1.x abc abc 4.0.6 description support date download
efg_plugin 1.x efg sbe 4.0.6 description support date download
efg_plugin 3.x efg community 4.0.6 description support date download

That’s what’s TXP.org is heading for, really, once it implements plugin code archiving. Current author is the author of the latest version. You can see who the original author was by looking at the plugin prefix.

That looks excellent.
It might not be necessary to list the authors in the main table, but rather in the plugin’s description to keep the listing compact. I think that’s what Ruud was hinting at.

What I would like to see is a clear separation between plugins that are still relevant to the current txp version and the ones that aren’t. Some plugins’ functionality has been implemented in the core while others have been abandoned completely and they should be listed only in an archive.

So we actually also need max txp requirements too as some plugins do not work in later versions.

Regarding plugins which have been implemented in the core, I am not sure which ones they are as some of them have been “partly” but not ‘fully’ implemented.
