Question on if_individual_article and if_article_list
I have a newbie question.
I’m trying to use a section to either display an individual article or a list of articles from a tag cloud. Along the right in a sidebar I’m also displaying a list of recent articles.
My question is this: will my page always show up as an article list because it’s displaying recent posts along the side?

Re: Question on if_individual_article and if_article_list
No, it won’t. <txp:recent_articles />
has no effect on the single article / article list property of the displayed web page.

No. (Aah, wet beat me to it)
You sound like maybe you don’t understand ‘section’. A section does not display anything. A section is the primary way of organising your content, so you might have news section, journal, products, photos etc as different sections. Using clean URLs this shows as, eg, mysite.com/products/ for a list of articles in the products section and mysite.com/products/widget-1 as an individual article.
Whenever you make an article you assign it to the appropriate section. In your Sections tab you decide which page template and style the section should use. It is in your page template that you put conditionals like if_individual_article. If you have txp:recent_articles in a sidebar in the same page template, it will output a list of recent articles always, unless you put conditionals with it.
I’ve written a step by step “learn by doing” tutorial about Textpattern first steps that might help you, especially with sections, forms and pages and how the relate to each other.
