Re: How do I disable automatic thumbnail generation?

Yes. Maybe just a checkbox next to “crop” to disable for each image during upload. Once disabled it remains disabled for subsequent uploads until the user requires a thumb at which point they uncheck it and set their required sizes. Thumbnails can be created as a separate operation so I don’t think this would be a problem.

allow people to set the thumbnail dimensions to 0 × 0 pixels and let that disable thumbnail generation

I vote for this one. Keeps the functionality in one place instead of having to hunt for prefs to do the same thing.

EDIT: Stuart’s suggestion has merit too though.

Re: How do I disable automatic thumbnail generation?

I like the idea of having a preference for setting thumbnail generation to on or off. I also think all preferences should be in the same place, so my vote would be for it to be in the Preferences tab.

In terms of consistency that makes sense, but I often create thumbnails for only some of the images, so to have to switch to a different tab in order to turn the feature on and off might start to grate a little. At least if I could say “no thumb please” or set the dimensions to 0×0 and then either upload a new one or hit Save to apply the changes to a particular image, it’s all in one place.

Of course, there could be a global option in the prefs that’s overriden on a file-by file basis, but how would the current ‘system’ that is in force be conveyed to the site administrator (global dimensions or last-used?), especially given that thumbnail dimensions are “sticky” from picture to picture? *ponder*

Re: How do I disable automatic thumbnail generation?

What makes all this confusing is that when you upload a new image, you are not asked if you want to generate a thumbnail or not. Not until after uploading the image, you see what the thumbnailing preferences were and get a chance to create a new thumbnail or delete the current one.

Re: How do I disable automatic thumbnail generation?

Agreed. Do you think it’s doable to put some indication/edit fields on the image list page or does it make it cluttered/confusing?

Re: How do I disable automatic thumbnail generation?

I don’t think putting extra input fields on the image list page is a good idea, especially since those fields are also on the image edit page. No point in duplicating them.

The 0 × 0 solution is relatively easy to implement, but it’s not something a new user would ever think of.

Adding a preference ‘auto-thumbnailing: yes/no’ wouldn’t work, because if no thumb width/size have been set yet, thumbnailing would fail.
Does anyone remember why the thumb_w/h preferences were hidden (this happened in october 2006)? Having those preferences visible is really all you need.

How about adding something like ‘enter 0’s to disable’? (after ‘Create thumbnail’) Or a ?-link to rpc.textpattern.com/help/?

I really can’t remember ever having seen those preferences. And I started with g1.18…

Re: How do I disable automatic thumbnail generation?

Well can’t we stop the automatic generation of thumbs then if you want one you either upload, which is what I mostly do anyway, or click on the “create” button? One extra click shouldn’t make you sweat too much methinks. ;)

Re: How do I disable automatic thumbnail generation?

Disabling the auto thumbnail creating now works (SVN changeset 2886) by setting both height and width to zero or empty values.

In the end, I think a better solution would be to have make the preferences for crop and thumb width/height visible again in the preferences. The thumb height/width and crop settings for auto-thumbnailing would then only be configurable through the preferences, so you could manually override it on the images tab whenever you need different thumb size for a particular image without affecting the normal, default thumbnail size.
