Can other files coexist safely with txp directories?

I’m setting up my website for (almost) the first time, and I plan to use Textpattern (for either the whole site or part of it). I have a couple of questions, one technical, the other more philosophical:

I’ve used the webspace previously to host a few images that I needed to have available elsewhere. Currently they’re in a subdirectory of /images. My question is, if I have Textpattern installed into the root of the site, will these directories stay safe?
Or will I need to work this out somehow (like install Txp in a subdirectory, and redirect the home page)?

My other question, asking for people’s experiences : If most sections of the site are essentially static, is it easier to do those on their own and use Textpattern for just the news/blog section, or is it not too difficult to have static sections with the whole site using Textpattern?

Re: Can other files coexist safely with txp directories?

Textpattern also stores its images in the /images folder. The images are named like this: 1.jpg, 2.jpg, 3.png, 4.gif etc. So if your own image files don’t conflict with the images as TXP stores them, they can coexist.

If a static directory exist or a static HTML document exists, then that document is shown, otherwise TXP handles that URL. So you can mix true static pages with TXP pages.

That hopefully answers your technical question. I’ll leave the other question for the philosophers on this forum ;)

Make sure you don’t overwrite your existing images directory with the one that comes with the TXP install!

I use TXP for completely static sites. Maintenance is much easier in TXP than editing html pages :)

You can overwrite the directory as it won’t remove the old content, but it can replace samely named images as ruud pointed out. If there is same named folders aka images versus images, then it just puts, or you can put, the content automatically inside of it.

Usually I store everything via TXP and inside textpattern’s database, as then I can move forms and content easily – no need for rewriting useless code that is same for every page. But in some cases I just pull content and forms directly from the textpattern database, eh, if I need to use it in another software (probably our own code, in most cases atleast btw) that is just too big to be implemented to Textpattern.

Welcome to the Tiny TXP World :)

Static pages are a cinch with TXP – I use textpattern for a ton of mostly static sites. Updating is super-easy, and adding new pages and sections is made easier as well. Go for it.

Me too – in fact I hardly use Txp in the traditional “blog” sense at all, using it to great effect for a photography site I run (in my sig) which is primarily static.

I feel bad for not thanking the quick replies sooner … shortly after posting this I got very ill for the last week.

But I do appreciate the responses, and am glad that there’s a good community for Textpattern around!

I think I’ll use it for the whole site (and I can afford to temporarily pull the existing file directories out of the images/ directory while setting up, then just put them back in, so I should be fine).
