Re: WordPress secures $29 million in funding

What I fear is a series of thinks

  • beginning of the end of wp being open source
  • beginning of the end of free wp
  • start of wp code directed towards the funders requirements/wishes instead of the community’s.
  • start of wp as a corporate software with an accordingly change in ethics

are we talking about the same wordpress here?

  • drupal has also acquired a large sum of money recently. do you think they’ll stop being open-source as well? what about mysql?
  • they’ve already turned down acquisition attempts of over $200 million, i doubt $29 measly ones are going to change that much :P their strength is their massive userbase. they’re not stupid enough to start scaring people away now.
  • since the whole reason wordpress became popular was because another popular-at-the-time blogging platform started charging money, why would they make the same mistake? they already make money through other mediums anyway.
  • WP is corporate software. arguably the biggest blogs/news sites/corporate sites/etc use it already.

Re: WordPress secures $29 million in funding

Who would want to pay of using WordPress? In the end WP is just a blogging tool – not a real CMS. Corporate bloging, damn I want read blog-newsmagazine. Wow, I got idea: how about BBC on WordPress? :D

Cheers!

Re: WordPress secures $29 million in funding

Also, Automattic is the company receiving the money, not Wordpress specifically.

Automattic has a business plan that monetizes outgrowths of their use of Wordpress (hosted blogging & spam fighting). And that includes helping corporations with the “whole blogging thing”.

I believe they also purchased gravatar and recently announced a distributed “twitter-like” system. Or maybe it’s more like noserub or mybloglog.
