Trailing periods for blacklist servers
I remember advice from some time back about putting a trailing period on blacklist servers to avoid performance problems. I think this was tied to a problem with a specific Txp version, but now I can’t find the details in the forum. Can anyone straighten me out on this? Thanks!

Re: Trailing periods for blacklist servers
I don’t recall the “trailing period” solution but at this current time the general advice to people having performance problems related to comments is to remove the blacklists entirely. If you feel a little “naked” doing this I can recommend installing manfre’s mem_akismet plug-in. It’s all I use and hasn’t let anything through yet.

Re: Trailing periods for blacklist servers
The trailing dot was needed in one TXP version (4.0.4, IIRC) due to a bug in the is_blacklisted() function. It’s no longer needed now.

Re: Trailing periods for blacklist servers
Thanks, Ruud.
I’d try Akismet on a personal blog, I can’t use it on a business site without paying a monthly fee of $50. That’s a little steep, especially when my current setup only lets through a couple of spams a week. The only spam-fighting addon I use is a customized version of mrw_spamkeywords_urlcount.

A good plug-in which I used before mem_akismet. Yes I see your point about the cost for a business site. Didn’t think of that.

Re: Trailing periods for blacklist servers
If my site was more heavily trafficked (and regularly updated… oops), something like Akismet might be necessary. As things are now, however, it’s not a sensible investment.
I plan to be updating more frequently during the next year, so hopefully I’ll gather enough traffic to make something like that both necessary and worthwhile. :-)

Never-the-less I think $50.00 per month is a little steep even for a business site. They must realise that there is good, “free” competition out there.
