Display custom text when article count is 0?

I would like to display a list of future and past events on my website. I have successfully created the page using two txp:article_custom tags — one with time=past and one with time=future.

My problem is that I would like to display a custom message when there are no future events. I cannot figure out what conditional statement I can use to determine this. Any ideas or advice?
