virtual hosts on a mac with textpattern

Hi everyone, I have created two virtual hosts on my mac. The first one being example.dev. Inside this host contains textpattern http://example.dev/textpattern/index.php. This is the basic textpattern site when you first install the components.

Now I have created a second virtual host http://precocious.dev. This will be my new textpattern project which mirrors a static website i built a while ago which I want to make dynamic.

My question is, should I install textpattern into precocious.dev directory and set up a new administration details to start using this site as my new development site? When I log into http://precocious.dev/textpattern/index.php

I mean, I can have two copies of textpattern installed on the same mac? This shouldn’t effect the database’s already installed.

I hope this makes sense..

Thanks

rob

Re: virtual hosts on a mac with textpattern

Each of your sites are separate entities, i.e. entirely different sites which will later be stored on different hosts online*?

Make a separate textpattern installation for each site and create a new database in phpmyadmin for each of your txp installations. Then enter the respective database name in the config details you specify when you install textpattern.

*if you end up hosting your sites on the same webhosting plan and that allows you only one database, then use the database “prefix” option for one of your sites when installing. This uses the same database but containg twice as many tables (the prefix allows keeps them separate from one another).
