how would you do this? Sections or categories?
Hello, i hope you can help! – I’ve got several questions but i’ll split them into different posts…
I’m currently building a txp site which will be a gig-guide of sorts. It’ll show different club-nights and info about them. It’s more of a learning exercise than anything else, and i’ve learnt a fair bit so far :)…
The front page shows 9 forthcoming events (or it will do!) but this will cover all areas. Ideally, i’d like the user to be able to sort by location too… I can enter the location into a custom field, but there could end up with being 50+ locations.
How would you do it? What’s the best way to do it? I originally thought of entering the location as a category, and then just having a page with a category list on it.
Is there a better way to do it?

I’d use categories to indicate which location an event is in. 50+ categories isn’t a problem.

Re: how would you do this? Sections or categories?
Is there any particular limit to the amount of categories?
Also, i’ve just given it a quick go using the standard <txp:category_list /> tag and it has indeed produced a list of areas which the site will cover. But when you click on the link for an area, it doesn’t show anything?
Have i done something wrong?

There’s no real limit.
I suspect you’ve created categories, but didn’t select a category for the event articles.

Re: how would you do this? Sections or categories?
ruud, i’m not having much luck. So far, i’ve created one category (Bexleyheath), and i’ve created 2 events both using the same category. It shows up in the category list, but goes no further :(
Have a look > http://mrqwest.co.uk/truevip
The front page shows 2 events, both show the category posted with a link, but it doesn’t appear to work! Can you help at all? or point me in the right direction?
Thank you

Re: how would you do this? Sections or categories?
Ruud, sorry mate. I’ve had a look through the FAQ’s and read up on various sites regarding broken tags etc.
I can’t seem to find any problems and nothing is showing up in testing mode.
I had a look on the wiki as to how the tag works but coulnd’t find much there.
I’ve placed the <txp:category_list /> in a new article, and as expected, it shows the category list. From here, i’m confused. What page / form does the output use? Is it the same as the page that the <txp:category_list /> tag is on?

See the FAQ I linked to. When in debugging mode, the tag trace gives more information.

Re: how would you do this? Sections or categories?
ruud.. thanks for your help! (didn’t understand the tag trace bit)
Finally found the problem though, i had all the articles posted in the future (as per my other thread) and the category list wasn’t picking up the posts. So another swift addition of time=“future” to my page, and it now works!
thanks again!

Re: how would you do this? Sections or categories?
Keep in mind that categories are not included in Textpattern searches. Neither are custom fields for that matter, but something to thing about.
Really wish there were options for what is or is not included in the search … custom fields and categories (and the excerpt for that matter) seem like no-brainers.

Hi Kevin, I agree! This would be really useful to be able to customize within a search form. I did find this completely hacky but simple way to expand the search to custom fields and keywords: http://www.paland.net/blog/383/textpattern-suche-auf-custom-fields-erweitern
