seperating everything! category1,category2 - previous,next - How?

Can somebody tell me how I seperate things in TXP?
“<txp:category1 link=“y” />, <txp:category2 link=“y” />” works fine but look nasty, if you have got only one category. And not every article has got two categories at once.

Or even
“<txp:older>Previous</txp:older> | <txp:newer>Next</txp:newer>” looks good as long as you have got older and newer articeles/sites/sections/…
If one is missing you’ve got “Previous |” or “| Next” which doesn’t look nice. :-(

So how can I check if both are present and then design it to look good? How to seperate things in TXP?

Thanks a lot!
