intermittent problem with file downloads - "Content decoding failed"

Txp 4.0.5 sites on a Joyent (Textdrive) shared accelerator… (two different servers, in fact)… offer mp3 downloads (managed by Textpattern). I have noticed significant drops in number of downloads since moving from their old BSD servers … I thought it was just the Xmas slowdown, but now getting reports from visitors that downloads aren’t working

today I got errors in both FF2 and IE7 (PC) – different errors, but am very concerned the issue lies with the shared accelerator hosting environment (either alone or in combination with Textpattern)

IE7 error: “Internet Explorer cannot download X.mp3 from X.com. Content decoding has failed.”
FF2 error: “C:..x.mp3.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read. Try again later, or contact the server administrator.”

Note that the files appear to download fine at first then suddenly that error shows up.

If you want to verify, try downloading an mp3 (as opposed to playing the flash-delivered stream) from this page.

Any help greatly appreciated. Have ticketed at Joyent but the problem seems intermittent. It’s killing me!!

Yep, intermittent (worked fine for me when I checked just now).

thanks for checking Mary – you’re on a PC right? which browser?

I posted this again because I got more emails from listeners reporting the problem over the weekend – and the Txp downloads stats shows a clear difference from before New Year (when I moved to Shared Accelerator, PHP 5+)

will upgrade to 4.0.6 tonight

I tried downloading with Firefox 2 and Safari 3 on Leopard, but in each case, the browser downloads ~9.5MB, then quits. Safari: “cannot decode raw data;” Firefox gave me “an unknown error occurred” when I retried.

worked for me in safari 3.0.4 on mac os 10.5.2

googling that safari error suggests it could be something to do with server compression…

Just tried the first file with FF on PC and got the following error:-

C:\Downloads\fotw-080213.mp3.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.

That was after about 21MB had been downloaded (apparently).

Also problem with Safari 3 on PC.

I get the problem now too.

I don’t know if this is related, but I noticed something. Despite the fact that we’ve said how large the file is, my browser reports that the filesize is unknown.

Could you open up publish.php and find line 143:

header('Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="' . basename($filename) . '"; size = "'.$filesize.'"');

Right after it, insert:

header("Content-length: $filesize");

Using Opera 8.5, download error at 20mb. Second time I get success after 18mb and the music is corrupted.

I just tried again and Opera crashed both times. Please fix it cos I love reggae!
