child categories & article_custom

I’m trying to list articles from a specific category using article_custom, but the default behavior of this tag appears to be to list articles in the specified category AND all articles in child categories of the specified category. Is there a way to limit the displayed articles to just the specified category (i.e., to not display articles in child categories)?

Also, I haven’t posted here in a while and noticed that one can’t limit search terms to those appearing in subject lines. It seems as though that option used to be there—when/why did that go away and is it coming back?
