XAMPP slow on Vista?

I decided to do a local install of TXP for the first time. I followed the advice in Textpattern Solutions and installed XAMPP. However all pages loads are taking a couple of seconds. I thought local development was meant to be faster :-P

I’ve googled it but not found a solution.

Re: XAMPP slow on Vista?

I’d check:

Rob, Nathan and I wrote that chapter together. I wrote the Windows part, when I was on my older computer, which had XP. I haven’t installed XAMPP on Vista as yet, since I “roll my own” setup, but I have no problems running multiple Txp installs on Apache and MySQL as services on my laptop. How much processor power and RAM do you have?

2GB RAM – Intel core2duo 1.66Ghz

It’s definitely XAMPP as it’s doing it on other PHP/MySQL scripts too

Re: XAMPP slow on Vista?

It was ZoneAlarm that was slowing me down. Uninstalled it and now everything is fast again!

Re: XAMPP slow on Vista?

I’m having the same problem, and I am very interested in hearing if anyone has a solution on hand? I’m about to embark on yet another Textpattern adventure, and find the lack of speed very annoying.

Maybe there is a work around, or maybe someone knows of an alternative to Zonealarm that is Vista compatible?

Re: XAMPP slow on Vista?

When I was on windows (XP) I used Outpost firewall and it played well with XAMPP. But it may be down to some (port) setting in zonealarm which will “release the handbrake” while using XAMPP.

Re: XAMPP slow on Vista?

I don’t have a solution for you Lars, at least not one that you will like. I purchased my new PC about 2 months ago. Of course it came complete with Vista installed. Isn’t it funny how you pay money for something yet have no control over it? I mean, who is the one with the big money here, me or Microsoft? Anyway I played with it for about 4 hours, found that it doesn’t like USB modems and promptly removed it and installed XP. I am lucky in that I have a fully-legal, purchased copy of XP so I can do that sort of thing. The way I look at it is that I have been beta-testing XP for the last 5 years or so and it is now a pretty stable product. I don’t see why I should beta-test something else for them especially something as fickle as Vista. It’s not like they are paying me for the privilege. At some point I shall probably move over to Linux.

Anyway I figure that everybody who goes to buy a new PC should say that they want it with XP pre-installed and see what reaction they get. Rant over.

Re: XAMPP slow on Vista?

I fixed it by uninstalling ZoneAlarm and using windows default firewall instead :-P

Re: XAMPP slow on Vista?

You could try Sygate Personal Firewall Pro 5.5 because it’s free and well-recommended although I’ve only tried it in XP. Apparently that’s the version you want not any of the new versions. And allegedly windows default firewall completely sucks…

Re: XAMPP slow on Vista?

If you’re connecting through a router, you don’t need to run a firewall on your PC.
