Recommended way of updating plugins, delete first or what?
I used to delete the old version of a plugin prior to installing a new one.
However the other day I just installed several new versions by simply overwriting the old ones – that appears to have worked without problems.
Then again the instructions of the new glz_custom_fields mention to delete the old one first.
So, is there any consensus on what works best?
Cheers Martin

Possibly no, as the new code replaces the old one. If the plugins name changes then you must delete the old one. It’s hard to imagine when it can’t work, possibly if plugin adds database fields etc. but if it fails because of that — it’s possibly as I see it – if it’s possibly it’s because of the plugin.
But yeah, in general no need to delete the plugin if the name doesn’t change (minus some database modifications, if plugin does them at the installation process by checking functions etc. Btw, i wouldn’t use it – does it even work? – i would use different method for making fields, tables – to make sure it nails).

Thanks Jukka,
yes, I had thought about name changes, but otherwise it seems unnecessary to delete the old ones first.

glz_custom_fields I think is the only one I’ve used, that modifies the db, seemed OK, too, but I have yet to update it to 1.1.

I only delete the older version if it is specifically required by the plugin author. 3 years now it is only a couple of plugins which had to be deleted before the new one was installed.
As a general rule, the newer version deletes/supersedes the older one so I would just not worry about deleting first.
