Special characters broken after upgrade to 4.0.6

After upgrading to 4.0.6 all special characters (both on the admin and public side) are broken. See screenshots:

I upgraded a couple of sites without problems. With this one though, I first couldn’t log into the admin panel with the error saying I should install at least 4.0.5 or put jquery.js in my /textpattern/ folder (both of which I had, obviously).

Then I uploaded the jquery file again which brought me into the admin side.

When I tried to call the public site, I had the error that my config.php was broken and that I should go to setup again. I did that, deleting the old and creating a new config.php (which differed slightly).

Now I can use the site but with all special characters mangled.

I’d appreciate any help!
Thanks in advance.

You probably have to set the ‘dbcharset’ variable in textpattern/config.php to latin1 (or to utf8 if it’s currently set to latin1).

Thanks. That did it.

Those charsets keep puzzling me. Do you know any good resource for learning how that stuff works?
