[wiki] Help Needed - Moving off MediaWiki

Alright this last bit of nonsense with Textbook has me really wanting to pull the plug on MediaWiki.

At this point I am really leaning towards DokuWiki. I don’t think we lose any features in comparison with MediaWiki and it can do Textile with a plugin. It also has an auth interface so maybe we can eventually make wiki login and forum login the same.

Also since DokuWiki is file based I think I could probably create a transformer to convert scrapped textbook pages into DokuWiki pages. That to me seems way more attractive then copying and pasting a ton of files. I think this would mostly be useful for the tag list.

The rest of the site I feel really needs restructuring, and I am not super documentation guy, that was Destry’s job, so I need help. Please contact me if you are interested in helping with this, or ping me on IRC.

I am open to the idea of doing this in Textpattern but I really feel it will be harder to manage.

Re: [wiki] Help Needed - Moving off MediaWiki

I have a feeling I missed a post or thread at some point in the past. Did Destry drop his involvement with TextBook?

A new baby and other commitments unfortunately have consumed Destry’s time.

Could write a script to pull from the database and write to text files. We’d just need to know what format they take.

That’s an option too. I’ve never been able to make heads or tails out of the MW db schema.

I’m going to setup a DokuWiki install and try to move some stuff over to see what the format looks like.

I’m more than happy to help with this move.

Did you know MediaWiki has an XML export function? It’ll export the last 100 revisions. See Special:Export (note the checkbox option to export more than the current revision) and MediaWiki help page

Re: [wiki] Help Needed - Moving off MediaWiki

Graeme: I was just looking at that.

I setup a quick installation of DokuWiki last night just to see how it stores the files. It seems to just store the actual text content of the file so it actually shouldn’t be too bad to generate the pages. There is a Perl module to parse the export format and someone wrote a perl script to convert MediaWiki markup to DokuWiki markup. If I can chain those two together we might be in good shape.

Now I just need to un-rustify my perl.

Patrick

If you would like, I’ll help you with restructuring and documentation as time allows. Let me know what you need and I’ll do what I can.

Re: [wiki] Help Needed - Moving off MediaWiki

Thanks guys. I want to at least come up with something to move the tag pages over since we definitely want to keep those.

New structure Ideas would be great since this can be a fresh start for the rest.

I agree that the tag reference would be better organized along these lines. This is far and away the section I use most often. I wish more of the sidebar links were to this kind of content, rather than the Wiki-related stuff.

I second that. You always have to go back to the front page to be able to find another page.

I don’t have much spare time at the moment, and I don’t know anything about Wikis, but if you have some small jobs that need to be done and won’t cost too much time, let me know if I can help out.
