Email new comments to commenters

Can this be done with Textpattern?

I want a checkbox in the comment form which allows commenters to be emailled when a new comment is added, like in WordPress…

I know that there is an email function for the author, as I receive an email when someone comments on my posts, but can this be altered/updated to do the same for commenters? Is there an in-built function/tag to do this already?

If not, has anyone written a plug-in to utilise this email-function in this way?

There seems to have been some ‘nearly’ attempts (search for email notification) and I’m sure it would be widely used but perhaps this is an example of why xPattern is needed?
