Is there a character limit to Article pages?

Hello,

Something strange has recently started happening. We’re finding that it’s impossible to save large-ish articles (21,000 bytes). Clicking on the Save button results in an index.php file being saved on my desktop. My colleague is finding this:

“Then we press SAVE, we get the Page Not Available thing although the PERMLINK works. I did notice that the date (on theatre listings) is 1970/01/01 and the time 01/00/00 – could that be something to do with it?”

(He’s on a PC, I’m on a Mac)

I just updated to v4.0.5 and that hasn’t helped.

So I went to one of the troubled articles and cut out all the text and then it saved fine. Added a little back in; saved fine, a little more etc etc and then at a certain point it stopped saving.

Thing is, I’m pretty sure we’ve had longer articles in the past…

Any ideas? Could it be the server timing out? My colleague and I are in different locations so have different access to the net.

Thanks,
Tim

Re: Is there a character limit to Article pages?

Any chance that you might rename the .htaccess file in the root of your site for just a little while, then retry to save an article, and rename the .htaccess file back to its original name?

You might receive a different error message which might reveal some useful hints.

Sorry, I just did what was asked of me and read the FAQ’s…

So we’re way under the 16Mb limit for articles but definitely experiencing saving problems.

Have you tried to rename .htaccess to see what happens then?

Re: Is there a character limit to Article pages?

Hi wet, and thanks

I just renamed the htaccess file (and changed it back) and it doesn’t seem to have had any effect – an (empty) index.php file is still being created on my desktop and the article doesn’t save.

I’m not seeing an errors either, where would I look for those?

(I did notice a ‘notice’ earlier, along the lines of: “Notice: Undefined variable: Posted in /../textpattern/publish/taghandlers.php on line 2477” but I think that’s unrelated.)

I had hoped for a web server error page in your browser. Alas, we have little to deal with.

Does you article text contain anything which might arise suspicions, like JavaScript samples? Otherwise, I’d advise you to look for hints in the web servers error log file or seek the help of your hosting company.

Re: Is there a character limit to Article pages?

It’s probably just coincidence, but all the articles we’re having problems with are the oldest on the site, created back in Sept ’05.

They are updated frequently – at least weekly – but they aren’t getting longer and longer, they are regularly trimmed.

We aren’t experiencing any problems with new articles.

We’ve never had a problem until this week. Does that suggest a server issue I wonder…?

No js, no. Just lots of text, links and textile.

Yes, I think the fact that the problem has just developed without any software changes points to a server issue.

Thanks for your time.
