Editing page templates externally
Yes, I know the “thing” with Txp is that it is ALL in the database.
And before you mention it: I know there are plug-ins like hcg_templates, to download the templats and edit them offline.
But this is still very cumbersome, since I want to work online and see my changes on the template, as I work.
I have really tried to learn to like the web-based built-in templates. But I still hate the way they change every time i change page or saves them + the window is too small. And it does not handle tab. And more…
So I REALLY would like to put in some kind of code in the template window, that points to my external template, so that i can edit it in an external editor, on line, trough ftp, so that I can create beautiful and well formed templates just like I used to…
I think it should be possible – after all this is the way pictures are handled…
I can hack somewhere, but where, and how?
PLEASE help!
Carachi

Re: Editing page templates externally
I use the Firefox It’s all text extension. You can use your favourite editor.
Or try Editarea.

Re: Editing page templates externally
Thanks for the tip! I will surely check them out!
There seems to bee some kind of problems with “It’s all text” on Mac, though…
And of course I use Mac…. and preferably Safari. And I would really like to use my favorite editor TextMate…
So more tips are welcome! :)
(is it really not impossible to link in external templates?)

no problems here using it’s all text with textmate. make sure you read the documentation right. in brief: take a .txt file, hit command+i choose to open .txt with textmate as default and apply to all. that’s it. next time you press the it’s all text button, the document will open in tm.

It’s not perfect, but in case it helps:
- Did you know Safari 3.x has resizable (h&w) text areas? Just drag.
- OmniWeb has a feature that opens text areas into their own window.

- TextmateBundle For Textpattern (Google Textpattern & Textmate for additional resources and comments for using this bundle)
I haven’t tried hcg_templates, but obviously it must not meet your goals. I’m not sure why it doesn’t, however. Could you elaborate? Thanks.

Re: Editing page templates externally
carachi, just use the Edit in TextMate bundle – I use Safari and edit templates in TextMate. Hit cmd+ctrl+e to open a TM window. See this if you’re on Leopard.
I haven’t had any problems with It’s All Text either, but I’ve been using 3b2 lately, so no extensions for me :(.
