Can I increase the # of custom fields to a higher amount?

I’m building a site that makes heavy use of custom fields – and I’ve run out :) Can I increase it to, say, 20? presumably it’s just extra stuff in the database and some php code in the admin interface, or am I missing a trick?

instead of the hack it is better to use a plugin and there are 2-3 out there.
