Re: The best hosting enviroment for TXP.

In my case (hosted in textdrive) “rss_admin_db_manager” does not do back ups of the database whereas the previous version of “postmaster” was sending server information with the emails.

Re: The best hosting enviroment for TXP.

To get back on thread, I’m an ex-DreamHoster currently migrating to Media Temple. DH’s billing snafu is only partially the cause of this migration, there were quite a few unrelated problems in the past two years and I needed a change for a while. That being said, DH is quite a remarkable host, especially for the price, and yes, txp works “out of the box” on it.

But I would also like to add that the same can be said of Media Temple: set up a database, drop in txp files and voilà, everything just works! :) Both are good hosts, but it may be said that they target a slightly different demographic, that’s all.

On a related note, has anybody had any experience with asmallorange?

A Small Orange do not provide the promises of ginormous real estate other vendors (falsely) do. Their accounts are reasonably priced and work exactly as stated, with all the features you’d expect. Any time I have needed any help they have been very responsive. Textpattern just works.

I wholeheartedly recommend them.

Oh another host that sucks incredibly (but TXP works on it): Hostgator. $10 for SSH access!

Re: The best hosting enviroment for TXP.

All right everyone, add your hosts that rock or suck to the wiki.

As I was going through some of the older forum threads, I’ve found a couple of recommended non-English hosts – should we have a table with a language column? Does it matter?

thanks for the info. i was thinking of possibly switching to a small orange. just curious if you’ve ever tried the plugin rss_admin_db_manager and have had it work successfully? (importing/exporting backups)

That is on my list of things to try, if I can ever finish up enough immediate client work to try new things! I have no idea why it wouldn’t work though.

Re: The best hosting enviroment for TXP.

used to be hosted in powweb before i bought myself a lifetime account at txd. Txp was working fine on it and their space/bandwidth deals are great! I was with them since their early beginnings but as commercial success crept in depersonalised automated support took over. Having said that, they also had a java app for live support chat which, depending on who was on the other end, most of the times, gave me the answers i needed. Their fee was good at $7.77/month (on sale now at $5.77) but that only allowed you one domain. Even without the lifetime hosting at txd there are cheaper plans out there for those who own more than one site.

With all the frustrations at txd I find their support to be prompt, polite, educated and informative so unless they piss me off in a major way, i’m sticking with them:)

ahh ok. i only ask because i’ve had extremely mixed results with rss_admin_db_manager on different hosts. it would work on one place (dreamhost when i was still using them) and then fail on another (netfirms) even with correct sql dump paths

edit: once again textile bq is the worst thing ever

I tried it a few days ago and it worked perfectly, from one DB to another on another server. Made a clean install in the second and imported a backup from the first site made with rss_admin_db_manager. You have to FTP any files and images you may have, of course.

BTW – I’ve been on Dreamhost for a couple of years and I’m happy with it. Some downtime every now and then, but not so often that I can’t live with it.

excuse my clarifying, but are you talking about a small orange hosting + rss_admin_db_manager or dreamhost + rss_admin_db_manager? (i was initially asking about the former)

iblastoff:

excuse me, I misunderstood. No small orange involved here, it was from Dreamhost to a small hosting provider called Filosoft, with servers in Germany.

Re: The best hosting enviroment for TXP.

I suggest nearlyfreespeech.net
They are a prepaid provider, which actually makes them much cheaper than other hosts (I deposit 10 dollars about every 3 months). You only pay for what you use. Add to that the unlimited amount of subdomains, and unlimited databases, and you have a winner. Also, they have possibly the best support team I’ve ever seen.
