that came totally unexpected. definitely gonna play around and make my first crockery theme just for the hell of it.

just curious, what do you plan to tackle next?

You won’t really be able to make a crockery theme without modding yet (variables are hard-coded at the moment), but that is the eventual idea. I need to make a preference, some better functions, etc, but you can see how it will basically work. (And just in case: don’t bother trying to make anything “final” yet, since things are subject to change still.)

Once we have the full theming ability in place, I would recommend that you keep the “default” even if you don’t use it, since the devs won’t support others’ themes for obvious reasons.

The idea is to change the Txp admin default theme, keep a “classic” theme (what the default is right now) for those that want it, and if you don’t like either, then you can make something yourself. That’s the large part of my responsibility for crockery, though I will will work on other stuff as I have time and inclination.

As an additional request on the topic of updates to Crockery…

Any chance of fixing the installation issues on Crockery? It is possible to install an older rev and then overwrite files with svn versions but a straight install would be easier.
Edit Will this only be limited to back-end themes? If public theming is envisaged, will it ever allow for some sort of automated plugin installation too? The idea being that theme authors could bundle the plugins needed by their theme and everything gets installed nicely.

As far as I know, you can install crockery without problems. I’ve done it (yet again) recently.
No, that’d be rather complicated, it’d mean having to create a special installation mechanism. The idea is (eventually) you would drop a theme’s folder into “themes” then change a preference to use it. On the up-side, being themes I don’t know that you’d really need many plugins, since you can have your own stylesheets, scripts, images, etc, in your theme folder. (Just to make sure there’s no confusion: it is admin-side theming that is being implemented here.)

At this juncture, yes, but I do hope to see public-side theming implemented eventually. It will take more work/time, though, since it means manipulating multiple db tables, etc, whereas what I’ve started here for the back-end is much simpler.

I haven’t bothered trying crockery yet but now I’m just going to HAVE to have a look aren’t I?

As for installing plug-ins, I’ve been looking at trying it during “setup” but it’s just way too complicated for poor little me. CSS I can do.

I have also been messing around a lot with Bert’s hcg_templates plug-in and was wondering if something similar might be incuded in the base code, crockery that is?

This is good news indeed, though I have to wonder if by the time Crockery shows it face that the majority of those wanting to change their admin look hadn’t done so already. The chatter on this forum, images on flickr and what I’ve been hearing on IRC lately indicates to me that the community wants/needs an admin theming mechanism soon.

On a side note, manfre mentioned on IRC that he modified the hcg_templates plugin to also export/import plugins.
