exclude own ip from logs?

i know there is this hack to do it. its also the hack i use for every TXP install. i guess most people probably use google analytics/mint or some other more robust logging system, but i figure since TXP has a logging option it might as well be a bit improved. possibly a way to add an option/choice to exclude own ip?

Re: exclude own ip from logs?

I think exclusion must look to cockie, nor ip. Because many users have dynamic ip (like me :P ). But may be this is task for external plugin?

Re: exclude own ip from logs?

Both, IP and cookie. Or do we want to check cookies at the frontend and then delete hits from logs? It would cause more longer pageloads and so on. So it have to be in the backend, but with really long log it would cause major database deleting at the time.

  1. You log in
  2. Script takes your ip, searches the txp_log in database with your IP and deletes the matches.
  3. And then it stores you IP for future deleting with your userid.
  4. When you log-in next time, it check’s your cookie and IP.
  5. If they both are same than the previous time, it doesn’t change anything.
  6. But if the IP is changed, then it changes the stored IP.
  7. And it continues the work with it…

But this have also faults and wrongs, but we can not relay on somewhat inserted IP nor cookie. And we neither don’t want to add new cookie to Textpattern.

Cheers!

Re: exclude own ip from logs?

I’m on ADSL, and my IP address doesn’t change often, but it does still get changed occasionally. There’s also the problem of folks that are stuck using the same IP as many other people (AOL).

The simplest way to go about it would be a a text input on the logs page that pre-fills with your current IP address, and you can click a button to cleanse the log of that IP address. That way, it is an option, rather than automated. (But, FYI, a plugin could already do that.)

You wouldn’t want to clean the logs upon login (do it on the logs page), but the rest of what Jukka suggests is possible, if it were an option (admin pref, defaulted to off) as opposed to completely transparent.
