TxP Demo - Uniform Server
Hi,
More and more web projects are starting to offer their apps in ready to go downloads for demo purposes.
Trying them out, I’ve grown to appreciate what Uniform Server and others are doing, like Mov’AMP (which is used for the Joomla! demo).
Uniform Server’s latest version, 3.5-Apollo, weighs in at 13.6MB zipped:
Apache 2.0.59
MySQL 5.0.41
PHP 5.2.3
XAMPP Lite 1.6.5 weighs in at 47MB zipped:
Apache 2.2.6
MySQL 5.0.51
PHP 5.2.5
I use XAMPP Lite locally for testing and evaluation purposes but offering a 50MB download with your project configured and ready to go feels like overkill just for a demo.
Which brings me to the question, would the devs be interested in offering a Textpattern 4.0.6 demo?

hmm…that sounds like the txp team would then get a bunch of support issues for the various server packages.

Re: TxP Demo - Uniform Server
Well, we’re always helping users with their local installs, like the mod_rewrite issues that normally crop up.
Saying that, a demo is just that, a demo, not for development or daily production use. Also, it will only run on Windows, OSX and Linux already have their stacks, and if you do have Win related issues, then you should go ask your questions at the Uniform Server forums.
I look at it as another way of introducing people to your product, keep in mind that there are many people want to run their own web software but are afraid to attempt it, so they stick with blogger or wordpress.com.

Re: TxP Demo - Uniform Server
Thanks Bert. I hadn’t heard of this one. Do I take it I could use this instead of XAMPPlite and what might be missing seeing as the download is a lot smaller? Actually you can get XAMPPlite as a 19MB EXE file though I note that Uniform Server also has an EXE of around 7MB.
Also, are these things self-contained in as much as can I run them on the same PC or are there likely to be conflicts?

Stuart,
For development purposes, I would stick with XAMPP Lite for now, it packs all the Apache modules and PHP extensions you would ever need.
XAMPP Lite:
Apache modules: 80
PHP extensions: 129
Uniform Server:
Apache modules: 27
PHP extensions: 8
What I like about US is the way they lay out their directory structure, very Linux like, with /etc, /tmp and /usr directories. Mov’AMP does it a bit better, using /var/www for the web sites – when I was rolling my own stack, I used to lay it out like my Debian server, very easy to move stuff that way, if you keep your /var/www structure consistent. So I would work on a TxP site locally, transfer it to the Deb server and not have to mess with config.php and the admin preferences.
Who knows what the future holds, the Windows AMP stack business is heating up in a big way, maybe US 4.0 may unseat XAMPP?

OK Bert. I have downloaded US and it appears to be self-contained so I can play with it whilst keeping XAMPPlite. :)

No.
…many people want to run their own web software but are afraid to attempt it, so they stick with blogger or wordpress.com.
Folks should use whatever they are comfortable with. You don’t have to have a local server to use Txp in any case, just a webhost.

i kinda agree…i mean if someone wanted to play with TXP they could easily just head over to opensourcecms and toy around with it to their hearts content without having to download and install anything.

Re: TxP Demo - Uniform Server
Mary, the demo is for those who would of ventured into XAMPP land anyway, just making things easier.
Steve, over at OSCMS, the demos are refreshed every two hours, not enough time to really get a feel for running your own site. Also, Chanh has added ads above all the demos, which if you pay a visit to the Textpattern demo (admin/demo), you’ll see the fonts are borked.

Re: TxP Demo - Uniform Server
Thinking out loud (hopefully it doesn’t get me in trouble :D )
If hcgtv and/or others believe this might be useful to promote Txp, is there a reason they can’t take this project on and offer the demo? Why would the devs have to offer it?

Yes, I could do it myself and offer it to the general public, but without a link to this demo at Textpattern.com, it won’t get the needed exposure. Case in point, welovetxp is a really nice site, yet there are people in the Textpattern community that have never heard of it.
Whatever the community does, the main page of the project should reflect those contributions, or else what’s the point?

Re: TxP Demo - Uniform Server
Gotchya. I apologize for misunderstanding. I thought that there was a desire and/or a need for the Dev. Team to add the demo project to their list of responsibilities. I think I better understand now that the request is for promo of a demo on the main site.
Thanks Bert
