Re: Migrate from EE to Textpattern? Advice? Help?
MT means “Moveable Type”. Basically EE exports to the Moveable Type export format, and Textpattern imports from it.
Based on posts around the forums it should be fairly easy; if you run into problems there are several people who have imported from MT who should be able to help.
I’m unaware of an easy way for EE to export to WP. Perhaps someone else might be.

Re: Migrate from EE to Textpattern? Advice? Help?
Well, it went almost perfectly. All of my nested categories got lost (all to unfiled). I thought it was because I used a special character in my category name (d’oh) but I changed that and it still didn’t work properly. Other than that, everything looks great. Thankfully, I just have multiple unfiled category names, so I’ll can fix that.
Considering this is the 4th migration of some of this data (greymatter to mt to ee to textpattern), I’m feeling pretty happy.
thanks for all of the help everyone.
Now, to fix my categories, see what I can do with templating, and then work on my photo gallery.
;-)

So, all you lost was the nesting of your categories, but not the categories themselves?

Cool, I assume you used this method? – http://expressionengine.com/wiki/Export_Entries/ – If so, maybe one day you could write up a little how-to on your new TxP site.
Thanks for filling us in on the licensing issues, makes one want to build an EE export business ;)

Re: Migrate from EE to Textpattern? Advice? Help?
Hi Mary,
Yes, my categories all migrated, but without the parent/child relationship and as ‘unfiled’. So, I have multiple unfiled categories. I’m not well versed enough in ee to know what I needed to change to capture the relationship, I just followed the (apparently partial) instructions on the ee forums and wiki. I was able to figure out that I needed to change a few site specific things to match mine, though.
As you can probably determine, the parent category is the first one; the second category is the child.
Here is a portion of the import file from ee:
