textpattern needs write access to the image directory. if you’re using an external image directory on some other random storage server, then textpattern can’t write to it. thus not possible.

This is looking promising! The chances have gone from zero to impossible to not possible because of write access :)
At present some storage servers allow public upload of files to myfolder. Does this mean the public has write access? Even if they do, they have to login or use a form or negotiate something else, making direct access not possible at present.
However, what if i have several txp sites and just want to use the images directory on one site which has big bandwidth allowances? Would it then be possible to use an external path for the images directory?

And it works same way as Textpattern’s image uploading works: a same kind of CHMOD, so it has access inside that server. The uploading work throught uploader script, that is at that server. That doesn’t change anything.
But in imaginary it ain’t impossible, but the changes to implement to Textpattern are zero, because it’s risky and in other ways dumb. With this I mean: you can put the uploading xhtml form anywhere but it doesn’t change the fact that you can’t integrate that super-big-gigahost-file-server with your Textpattern.

I understand most of that, Jukka. But can you verify – does my txp setup on server 1 have to be integrated with server 2 if I want to write images on server 2? If I already have txp set up on server 2 and its images directory is 777, is it still risky and dumb? In other words, I’ve ditched freebigandeasy.com and want to use my hosting account on server 2 to the max and use it for all my txp images and files which I need on server 1, server 3, server 4 etc. Or is that not realistic either?

Peter, I guess the motivation behind your question is to save on your own hosting space/bandwidth. For that to be an issue in today’s relatively cheap hosting market means you have to either, have a) a lot of photos or b) you are extremely popular or c) both (or d: you’re posting images you’d rather not host yourself :-/)
Additionally, using a third-party site for your own site UI elements would, I imagine, be a whole lot slower than hosting them yourself and makes your site dependent on the existence of other services.
You could tackle the problem another way around, for instance by using a plug-in to pull-in the pictures into a gallery or similar from the third-party site, e.g. in much the same way that the various flickr plug-ins do already.

My motivation is to do with superlarge storage and superfast fiberoptics in a couple of years time, Jakob. It seems to me that maybe everyone will be using online storage very soon and downloads will be virtually instantaneous. Can TXP be adapted to keep up with this? And yes, it would be nice to have all my media, files etc all in one place. txpstorage.com maybe?

Follow the Textdrive model by offering low-cost lifetime hosting to investors and including Textpattern pre-installed with unlimited files storage included. It worked once and may work again. But who will leave with the profits this time?
