Upgrading article_image
If I understand correctly, article_image is a glorified custom field that lets you associate an image to a post. Looking forward shouldn’t this be upgraded to article_media? Where you can associate any type of media to the post?
I’m planning to use this field to associate any media type to the article, and then use a special tag to call the field. Obviously, this invalidates the article_image() tag, but opens up functionality to more than just an image.

Nothing new. People have created tags to allow multiple images in the article_image field already.
You are free to (ab)use the article_image tag for anything you see fit ;)
