Only ?=messy Link Mode working.
In short, I must have done something to disable Permanent Link Mode for /section/title because it, and all other options except ?=messy deliver a 404 error. I see this as a disaster when it comes to search engines indexing the site.
I first blamed tru-tags which just came out with version 3 (up from the great 2.3). Uninstalled the 2.3 plugin, tested PLMode /section/title, still 404. It’s frustrating – did I do something a while back that goofed up clean URL’s in PLMode?

so section/title clean urls worked fine before previous to installing tru_tags? any other mode beside messy work? .htaccess file still present? anything weird in diagnostics?

Re: Only ?=messy Link Mode working.
I don’t remember if section/title worked prior to tru_tags – currently, no other URL styles but messy work and the .htaccess file is still present and unaltered although I did turn it ‘off’ earlier by adding an underscore to the file name. I examined if that was the cause and as far as I can tell, it isn’t. Diagnostics: “All checks passed”

Re: Only ?=messy Link Mode working.
Mary’s response inspired me to tool around with the .htaccess file It looks as though I tooled with it earlier months ago and forgot. Granted, I don’t have the new tru_tags installed, but uploading the .htaccess file again with a change found in FAQ caused the whole site to go 404. In Notepad, I undid the change and uploaded again – not only was the site up (naturally) but so too were the /section/title URL’s I’d been hoping for.
My mistake was forgetting that I had manipulated the .htaccess file already uploaded. Uploading again and starting fresh solved things for me though, again, I’m skipping the tru-tags plugin. I would only re-install that for tests if you like because I never got around to using it anyway. Thanks Mary and I’m sorry I didn’t check the FAQ.
