Looking for ideas on setting up blog section

Currently working on a site for a school, and looking for some ideas from others here as to how to setup a section which contains various blogs.

The school has a section called “classes”, under which falls things like “maths”, “geography”, etc.

The main “classes” section page needs to contain static text, but the classes are a bit more complex – each one needs the following:

1. Maths – blog (teacher’s blog), photos, information about the maths class
2. Geography – blog (teacher’s blog), photos, information about the geography class

I am not sure how to setup each teacher’s blog. Ideas? Sub-sections would be obvious, but not going to happen soon. Categories? Each teacher is going to want to assign a blog article to more than one category I would think. Tags?

Any ideas welcome. Thanks.

Re: Looking for ideas on setting up blog section

Bump! Still looking for ideas on this one. Thinking each blog should be a category, and then use tags to separate the blog topics. Opinions? Have not used tags before. Anyone got experience with the best tags plugin, or any other useful info?

Re: Looking for ideas on setting up blog section

I think your maths, geography, chemistry… categories idea sounds fine. I’m not sure how tags and categories interact or can be searched for in combination but maybe it’s not necessary to categorise down any further – after all the titles of the articles also speak for themselves too.

I guess that how the site will be used and by whom will determine whether you need further categorisation. For instance, if the school has different year groups you could use category 2 for those. Another option might be to have further categories like projects, exhibitions, performances, demonstrations, open days, … in category 2 that I suppose one might conceivably want to search for in a cross-curricular (cross-class) way. You could also use a custom field and “if_different” for sorting articles that belong to particular project topics within a class…

Re: Looking for ideas on setting up blog section

Thanks Jakob. Helpful as always ;-) I guess I need to take some of the ideas for a spin and see where I end up. Will post again if I come to a brick wall..!
