I can't find this error message on the forums, I'm really stuck!

The requested URL /3inatree/updates/index.php was not found on this server.

in the ftp I can see the index.php file & when I open it – it seems to be correct.

oddly enough, when I go to http://www.3inatree.net/updates/index.php I CAN see the site! but it’s not complete & you can’t navigate it without getting the same error.

external links do work.

can anyone help?

thank you,
~Penny.

Hi- Although I’m not an expert at textpattern yet :-), I think it might be that you don’t have mod_rewrite module installed on your server? To test, I would temporarily switch permanent link mode in the textpattern preferences to ?messy and see if the links work.

Re: I can't find this error message on the forums, I'm really stuck!

thanks for trying, but it didn’t work. I even tried changing the production status to both testing & debugging. didn’t make a difference.

the full error message reads:

The requested URL /3inatree/updates/index.php was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

any other ideas?

~Penny.

Re: I can't find this error message on the forums, I'm really stuck!

production status is only for error reporting.

http://www.3inatree.net/updates/index.php?s=about works so yah its either an .htaccess, clean urls not supported or mod_rewrite issue.

what does admin->diagnostics tell you? does it say anything about clean urls? also make sure the .htaccess file packaged with the txp install is present in your /updates directory.

relevant faq here and here

Seems to work fine with messy urls:

http://www.3inatree.net/updates/index.php?id=1

Pre-flight check
All checks passed!

the htaccess file is identical to the textpattern 4.0.5 install version, so I don’t think it was corrupted. should I try replacing the server version with the 4.0.5 install version (even though I’m sure they’re the same ~ I’m just superstitious enough to try anything at this point)?

Re: I can't find this error message on the forums, I'm really stuck!

seeing as messy urls work fine, then either your host doesn’t support clean urls out of the box or you will have to modify your .htaccess to suit your hosting environment (though some hosts just don’t support them at all. for example my site is on netfirms and i have to deal with using messy urls as well). i’ve already linked the relevant faqs to help you get started.
