A problem no one seems to be able to fix

I run moviehamlet.com and have done so for several years. For the past seven or eight months things have deteriorated and the technicians at Powersurge have been unable to locate the problem. I’m now asking you on this forum if you recognize these problems. Powersurge has suggested a code problem, but that seems unlikely since the problems appear now and then and are not 100 percent consistent. If there was something wrong with the code shouldn’t the site be down permanently?

  • The site is often slow. Sometimes when you click on a link all you get is a blank window even though the link is correct. At other times, everything works fine. Sometimes it helps to click on the link several times in a row. This problem has affected my visit stats in a very negative way, of course.
  • The quality of the Internet connection makes a difference. If your connection is very good then the problem only exists occasionally; if it’s bad it happens a lot. It happens in Explorer as well as Firefox.
  • Another problem has revealed itself just recently. There seems to be something wrong with the RSS flow. My blog entries and reviews don’t appear on sites such as bloggar.se until days after I wrote them, which hasn’t happened before. As for blog portals outside of Sweden (my country), I’m beginning to wonder if they appear at all. I now get most of my visitors from Google searches and the IMDb, where I have links to the reviews, but rarely anyone from foreign blog portals, which I used to.
  • When I publish new entries inside Textpattern there is also a problem that seems related to the others. When the site is slow, Textpattern works fine (no blank windows), but when I’m about to publish something new and press “publish” it just stops for a while and then there’s a message (“you tried to open index.php. What do you want to do with it? Open, save to disk, etc”). Open only opens Dreamweaver and nothing else happens,so I press cancel and publish the entry as a draft (which always works) and then publish the article from the list of articles, where you change status, and that also always works. But it’s a nuisance.

All of this is irregular and there seems to be no logic. A friend of mine who knows this stuff better than me thinks Powersurge is still to blame, that this has nothing to do with Textpattern, but before I dump them I need to be sure. Does anyone recognize these irritating problems?

  1. faq
  2. faq

After all try disabling logs and DNS look-ups: In textpattern > admin > preferences > advanced, set Use DNS to No, and see if that makes a difference. If not, try disabling logging altogether.

But basically that’s host issue, bad performance and so-on. Because those problems are syndroms of host-issues, like ie. unworking Mine-types and MySQL issues. So ask from the hosting company, if they could do something for their bad performance.

Cheers!
