[request] IP banning

There are ways of banning IP addresses using htacess files and probably other stuff as well, but it would be very convenient if you could do it in the Admin interface.

I get constant ‘post’ attempts from automated spam campaigns, clogging up my visitor logs and I’d like to block the suckers from even seeing my pages, never mind trying to post their crap (which they never do because I use spam block plug ins).

Anyone up for it? An IP block plug in would be very useful.

Re: [request] IP banning

But how do you decide, which IP’s to block, if the spam attacks are coming from some really large networks? The result would be, to cut out a really large amount of legitimate Users, just to block one spammer.

I think the IP only approach is totally unsufficiant as a spam measure.

What do see as post attemts ?

May be its just some robots scanning your Site for Info.

regards, marios

Re: [request] IP banning

I’ve been watching it – there’s a pattern to it. ‘Post attempts’ means they try and post a comment….and it gets blocked because its spam. I often see one IP try it, then another and maybe a third, consecutively, so its obviously being passed around a spamming network.

Anyway, that’s a slightly tangential point I don’t want undermining my request……for whatever reason, an IP ban plug in would be very useful.

Re: [request] IP banning

Any takers?
There are a series if IP adresses I want to block, because I see them continually trying to post (spam) at one article where I’ve now turned off the comments, and trying to navigate to a forum URL I temporarily ran, which got inundated with spam. I then deleted that forum entirely, and these low-life are still trying to go there and post more spam. All of this is clogging up my visitor logs and using up bandwidth.

Re: [request] IP banning

If you want a webinterface to manage your .htaccess file, I’d recommend looking for a separate tool instead of making it a textpattern plugin. It would surprise me if something like that didn’t already exist.
