NEWBIE: Help with theme: Web writer v3

Hello.

I have just discovered Textpattern and CMS. Loving the possibilities that i can use this for. However, I am not really good at code but willing to learn lots more. I am a graphic designer strengths in Indesign/Photoshop and a basic level of Dreamweaver and Flash. Know a little in CSS and XHTML.

I have manage to get the textpattern (4.0.5) working and is talking with the mysql. (took me a little while but fairly confident on it now). I am using a Mac running the php and mysql of my local machines as a testing ground before the whole site get uploaded to a PHP server.

I have picked up the web writer theme. ( great starting point) and followed the instructions to teh point where I have installed plugins, and added some testing content into the theme.

I have a few questions ( i hope this is the correct place to post this).

1) There are various ‘sections’ and can see it on the first page ‘nav’. Things like(‘About’, ‘Archives’, etc…) I am unable to add content or a page link to these areas? How can I create these pages….

After I clicked on it, I have a error says “Not found. The requested URL /~user/contact/ was not found on this server.”

it’s looking for a folder within my ~user directory?

1b) This could be related, as I click on the articles shown in the front page, it takes me to “The requested URL /~user/article/8/merchandise-for-sale was not found on this server.”

2) I am also have a problem adding images to the related articles.

I have uploaded a logo (jpg) and is sitting in the directory via textpattern admin. Has an id #. But I do not know what the codes to get the images to the article.

These are the two major questions. The website is designed for the national martial arts group. Therefore they would like to add content of pdfs, photos of demotrations and events, article writeups, etc….

I like the admin section where I can define levels for users. So other people can insert content. However I am still yet to start on this.

Any insights and suggestions? lookign forward for your help.
Keane

When you create a new article, by default the section is “article.” But in the right column, you can change the section to “About,” or any other section you’ve created. When you save it, that’s the section where it will appear.

Are you trying to use textpattern at a domain, like www.domain.com, or within a domain like www.domain.com/~user/

If it is the latter, you might try switching to “messy url’s” on the Admin > Preferences page. The template was setup to work in subdirectories, but a /~user/ directory may be the issue.

I have uploaded a logo (jpg) and is sitting in the directory via textpattern admin. Has an id #. But I do not know what the codes to get the images to the article.

Into the article? Did you install the upm_image and upm_img_popper plug-ins? If so, you should see a link for “Insert Image” near the top of the left column. That will allow you to insert the image anywhere in the article that you want.

Hello.

Many thanks for replying to my post. My computer was down for the last few days…. following up on your advice….

1) There are various ‘sections’ and can see it on the first page ‘nav’. Things like(‘About’, ‘Archives’, etc…) I am unable to add content or a page link to these areas? How can I create these pages….

I had followed this and still no luck, was wondering if there are something else that i have not done.

I found the section and it allowed me to change. on the article menu. I also added a category to it for testing.
I have added the section and category. Saved it.

At preview.

I can see the article, via preview.

However via the nav bar, I still can not. Example is the “contact” button. The browser replies by The address bar changes to “http://10.1.1.4/~Chan/contact/” The browser screen “Not found” “ The requested URL /~Chan/contact/ was not found on this server. “

thanks
Keane

PS I currently do not have it on line cos I ahve not access to a php/mysql server.

PPS. I have yet to try the other two suggestion – but have found the image plugins and will test it. ( was intial installed but I had not noticed the extra button), but will try this evening.

It sounds like you are developing this locally then? I do not know how to troubleshoot what you are seeing, as it may have something to do with your local install.

Those templates were tested and are working on multiple sites, when installed at the root of the domain, or in a subdirectory. Why it is not working on your local install may have nothing to do with the templates.

I will continue to give it a go. yeah i am locally developing it, if I get chance of getting online somewhere i may come back to you to see if there’s a bit more light.

Could be something with my install so i will start from scratch again. Thanks for the input.
It’s a really neat template, will let you know whence i get it working.
