whats the confusion? a txp test site is basically set up exactly like any other textpattern installation. there is no real difference.

if your test site is still somehow linked to your main site then your config.php is still messed up.

well i tried my best, the config file looked identical to the main site’s except the location was set to the new subdirectory. i’m going back to trying out local site development, i dont want to screw up my website again like what i did this morning.

You have to change not just the location (that is, the folder where TxP files are located) but also the database you wish to use. So, the config.php should not be identical except the location, but except the location and the database.

There in the config.php, you should change the line that points to the main site’s database so it points to the test site’s database.

ok so plenty of cups of coffee later i found that i was somehow dragging a duplicate config file one folder up from the textpattern core. i was so concerned with this dupe that wasnt even doing anything that it was enough for me to do damage to my main site, as well have plenty of difficulty getting my first local site up and running, which it is now.

and also for anyone having trouble getting apache in xampp running, i have found that the problems start when you begin to muck with your virtualhosts settings. check all your syntax carefully cause that green light will either flip on or it won’t. granted i bet it wont turn on it tomorrow for me and i’ll be back to square one ;-)

EDIT: however the different sections of my site on the nav bar are now broken links. :-( the main blog page works locally though which is a big step.
