Re: Thinking about building an e-commerce plugin...

Hey Gerhard thanks for getting back to the thread!

‘Something Big’ – Nice way to leave us in suspense :)

Is your development different from http://homeplatewp.com/TextCommerce/ ?

I know you are probably busy but will it allow for Paypal Pro or Protx integration as I do not want the buyer to leave the site during payment.

Any mini updates or snippets of information about the development would be great :)

The guys over at http://www.magentocommerce.com/ are doing something interesting as well. Looking at the features may give you some more inspiration!

Thanks Again,

Re: Thinking about building an e-commerce plugin...

Speedking, I have been putting back into TextCommerce all my code, I am working on an e-commerce website and by the time it will be finished, it will have to be a fully functional TextCommerce. I haven’t been working with Levi or Chew, but I made sure they have what I have. I could see a lot of my code make it to the TextCommerce repository on Google Code, couldn’t say how much though. The shop I’m working on will be using Protx as the payment gateway so you will be covered in that respect ; ).

My version of TextCommerce is specific to this project’s needs, I couldn’t tell how useful it will be for you, but drop me an e-mail and we can take it from there. I have some good references in terms of other people I have helped out with some complex and bespoke TXP plugins, will be happy to share if interested.

Re: Thinking about building an e-commerce plugin...

Hey Gerhard thanks for the quick and detailed response.

It is looking like a straight fight between the tried and tested CubeCart vs. new comers magentocommerce or Textpattern solution!

I will speak to the client who wants to integrate a TXP website with an e-commerce element to sell products. I will see how long they can wait and what features would be essential for them etc! Your solutions sounds very promising.

I am aiming to create something like http://shop.birlouez.net/ for the store element which then attaches to a TXP blog and portfolio site and a whole host of other things that TXP offers!

Paypal Pro is at the moment the cheaper option for a payment gateway implementation.

Thanks,

Re: Thinking about building an e-commerce plugin...

@speedking
I don’t think the Textpattern solution will be as good as the magentcommerce one to be honest. I looked at their website and it looks really good. I can hardly wait to give it a go. Then again, you are right, TXP has a host of other great things ; ).

Paypal Pro looks good, but I don’t like that transaction % fee. Did you look into Protx?

@iblasoft
Well, to be honest with you mate, I am again stretched. I’m sprinting to have the custom fields plugin finished and then the big thing ™ : ) so I can say for definite that nothing will happen – as far as I’m concerned – with TextCommerce for the next week or so. This is Levi’s thunder anyways, I just jumped on the bandwagon when I realized that he managed to put everything together what I had spread across multiple smaller plugins and hacks.

Re: Thinking about building an e-commerce plugin...

I’m scratching my head trying to work out what to think about all this.

I am not critical of any plugin developer (they do something I can’t do!), and while I completely understand the pressure of work and that plugins are produced in people’s spare time, something like $500 has been contributed to the development of this plugin.

That may be only a fraction of what it really costs to produce this plugin, but it would be nice to know what is happening, rather than this endless silence.

Is there anyone listening/reading from the Textcommerce project?

:-(

Re: Thinking about building an e-commerce plugin...

im not understanding the point of the google code repository though…
shouldn’t there have been changes to it ever since it was introduced? as far as i can tell the versions of the various parts of the plugin have remained the same since the initial alpha

Re: Thinking about building an e-commerce plugin...

well..with no real updates from textcommerce, magento has released its first beta! the initial file download size is sorta ridiculous (58 megs. apparently they opted to include high quality demo store item images) but im downloading it now. woo!
