Spamhaus alternatives?

I’m hosted on TextDrive, which is currently having a problem connecting to Spamhaus servers. Because this is causing performance problems for my site, I need to pick one or more alternate spam blacklists to test comments against.

In looking around the forum, I’ve seen mention of SpamCop and the Distributed Sender Blackhole List. There’s at least one report that SpamCop tends toward false positives. I can’t find any opinions about DSBL’s effectiveness, just the blacklist URI being given as an example.

Does anyone have recommendations for blacklists other than Spamhaus? Preferences for or against SpamCop or DSBL? Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Spamhaus alternatives?

I wonder if these blacklists (which are aimed at blocking email spam) have any significant and positive effect in fighting comment spam. And only the very conservative blacklists would be usable, because some of the others block all dial-up and/or dynamic IP netblocks which “works” when dealing with email spam, but just gives false positives when fighting comment spam.

Using one of the anti-“comment spam” plugins is probably much more effective.

I’m using the first two now. I haven’t noticed anything wrong, but there’s no way to tell if false positives are blocking potential commenters.

I’d considered trying to use the same comment spam blacklists employed by Movable Type’s SpamLookup plugin. I’m not sure how such things work, however, and didn’t know if these other lists would provide data in a format Textpattern can use.

For what it’s worth, SpamLookup uses the following settings:

  • IP Blacklists: bsb.spamlookup.net, opm.blitzed.org (just discovered that this is dead)
  • Domain Blacklists: bsb.spamlookup.net, sc.surbl.org

That’s one of the reasons that I wish TxD would get themselves sorted with Spamhaus. That blacklist seems to be more conservatively managed than some others.
