Re: TUDelft Master Students Blog-CMS
I see different colors, different positioning, different sizes, different typography, different images (including the calendar, but not the pencil). From the outside there are some similarities, but to me as a visitor these are really different designs ;)

Re: TUDelft Master Students Blog-CMS
@ Ruud Van Melick: It’s not because it’s black text in the icon that it is different. And for you information the text and link color is exactly the same too. The calendar icon is my image used without permission. You see it clearly here that IT IS the same:

I want the pencil and calendar icon removed since I am the owner and creator and they don’t have my permission to use it.
Best Regards,
Veerle Pieters

Re: TUDelft Master Students Blog-CMS
I would agree with Ruud regarding the differences in the design, I would also point out that one site uses divs and the other tables. The one uses 2 columns the other 3.
@Veerie regarding the images, i couldn’t say who came up with them first as i saw similar designs on the net for some time now. I’ll take your word for it though.
The colours of the background, links, text, etc and their combination thereof can not be copyrighted as that would limit tremendously the design possibilities.
Great site by the way:) Would love to see it ported to txp.

I have no problem with that.

My site is online with these since March 2006, just check any css gallery. I can show the original files and I wish people would take this seriously. It’s stealing of something that isn’t yours. Oh and btw a quick browse in my portfolio should tell who is creating and who is stealing here.

The combinations as a whole is copyrighted. Also it’s common courtesy that you do not use the exact same color combinations as someone else if you call yourself a designer. You obviously have no idea how it is to have your work stolen. If this was me using the colors and images of another person the web would be too small. So I am using the same standards the other way around for a change. How anyone can support and defend stealing is beyond belief.

Re: TUDelft Master Students Blog-CMS
Just to be clear, I’m not supporting or defending stealing. Looking closer, the calendar icon and pencil are indeed the same as the ones as used on Veerle’s website (the calendar image has been modified a bit to fit with the different background, but the calendar itself is/looks identical).

What I said was not to compare you and Faisal but you and the rest of the web. I have seen similar calendar icons all over the place whereas the pencil is a generic symbol. Having said that, Faisal’s and your icons are identical.

I can call my self a designer but not one for the web. I am an architect with well over 20 years of experience so I can tell one design from the other. As a designer yourself you do know that the structure of a page is an integral part of the design and Faisal’s structure is totally different.
I am not here to support Faisal as that battle is in between you and him. Apart from his few posts in this forum I don’t know him. I am not supporting stealing either as I did have my work stolen which resulted in a long legal battle which I eventually won.
What I am debating is that there are enough differences in the structure and layout of the two sites for them to stand autonomously.
Having said that, here are some sites for Faisal or anybody else who is interested whose icons are distributed for free

I never claim I invented the calendar or pencil icon so it’s irrelevant that you’ve seen similar ones all over the place. What makes this issue real is that Faisail stole my interpretation and that’s theft and people need to understand that’s not done how small it may seem to some. What’s next steal $30, oh i’ts only 30 why not. I also never had a problem with the structure but just with the icons.
Also if you are known on the internet and this would be ME making that design, even when you state it’s so different all hell would be loose and lots of people would call me a thief. So I am measuring with the same standards. I think I am still reasonable since I only have a problem with the icons.

Re: TUDelft Master Students Blog-CMS
I think they are a little too similar beyond my personal comfort zone. So yes HEAVILY influenced, but one has really nice code and the other doesn’t…
Veerle you should feel both “happy” that you are worth stealing and “angry” that it has been done … no one has pirated my design to date .. sob sob … still anyone who is in the css world will know who was first …

Re: TUDelft Master Students Blog-CMS
The following images are clearly stolen, so be a good boy and remove them from your site.
Original (http://veerle.duoh.com/):
- http://veerle.duoh.com/graphics/icons/icon-calendar.gif
- http://veerle.duoh.com/graphics/icons/icon-pencil.gif
Stolen (http://www.epastudents.org/):
Using similar colours, etc isn’t, in general, something you can complain about, but in this instance, Veerle’s work was clearly ripped.
Original (http://veerle.duoh.com/):
body {
/*color:#aec4c4;*/
color:#ceebeb;
background:#222d2d url(./graphics/colorstrip.gif) repeat-x 0 0;
font:76%/140% Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;
}
Stolen (http://www.epastudents.org/):
body {
/*color:#aec4c4;*/
color:#ceebeb;
background-image:url(../sources/mainGradient.png);
background:#222D2D url(../img/up/flagstrip.gif) repeat-x 0 0;
font:76%/140% Verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;
}
What seems obvious to me is that Veerle’s CSS and images were “borrowed” without her permission. Consider yourself lucky she’s only asking you to remove her images from your site.

It’s that simple. There is no point in trying to justify it, the images are stolen, the code is stolen, inspired as a whole or not, stealing elements just isn’t cool.

Re: TUDelft Master Students Blog-CMS
Veerle,
I am so so sorry for the discomfort I gave you. I will immediately remove the Calendar and Pencil Icon.
I will change the font of the heading too.
I will also re-write the CSS, so that it doesn’t look stolen.
If there is any other thing you want me to change, I will do that.
It is true that i took the inspiration and help from CSS, but I couldn’t find better Icons at that time, as I did it hastly. I never did that before it was only I had the immense pressure and less time in my faculty.
I apologize wholeheartedly. I knew exactly what Veerle feels.
I have my exams till 29th. I will remove it right after that.
Faisal.
P.S. Thank you Daniel, Ruud, Mary and Yiannis.
P.S.S. Mary, I seek your help in something and I sent you an email few days back from your website. It’s about authors and their multiple roles. Here is the thread address
