Tab option 'View site' error 404 returned
Hi,
Experienced problems whilst setting up a test site using Txp 4.0.5 when using the option tab ‘View site’ .
Setup in preferences correct as ‘ www.idesigner.co.uk/textpattern ‘ however ERROR 404 returned . In response to FAQ topic Errors, Warnings and Notices ‘ 404 error unless I use index.php ‘ removed hash from .htaccess file but no change, still returned 404 error.
Contacted host 1and1.co.uk technical as suggested in FAQ and they replied ;
Regarding your query, this code “DirectoryIndex index.php index.html” on
your .htaccess file is messing up the configuration of our servers,
index.php is one of the automatic defualt page wherein your website will
be pulled up automatically. Try renaming your .htaccess file to
.htaccess_bak, then access the URL:
http://www.idesigner.co.uk/textpattern/ that would automatically show
your website. By default, our server pulls up .php extension since it is
supported on your package.
Followed their suggestion and ‘View site’ now works but I am concerned that re-naming the .htaccess file to .htaccess_bak may compromise the integrity / security of Txp etc
Any advice please

The .htaccess file is mainly needed to support clean URLs, but if your server setup does that automatically or better without .htaccess, then that’s fine. It does not affect security.
