1and1 and trouble

Hi everyone,

As a new person to TextPattern, forgive me if I am asking a newbie question, but I am stuck. I installed TextPattern on 1and1 servers but am getting the following diagnostic errors:

File directory path is not writable: /homepages/16/d93682108/htdocs/files ?
Clean URL test failed

Any tips on the simplest way to tackle this hurdle?

Thanks,
Michael

Re: 1and1 and trouble

For the files directory, make sure the directory actually exists. If it doesn’t, make it. If it does, check that its permissions are incorrect (I think if you search you should be able to find the correct permissions, I can’t recall from the top of my head).

The clean URL is a problem with .htaccess. Make sure you have uploaded it. If you don’t see one both locally and on your server, check to make sure your FTP program shows invisible or system files, and then upload it.

Hope this helps, and of course let us know if you have any other problems.

Re: 1and1 and trouble

Thank you very much for the response Nic.

I had noticed the lack of .htaccess shown on my FTP site. I will action that.

As to ‘File directory path is not writable: /homepages/16/d93682108/htdocs/files’ I am still a bit confused why the computer is searching out this particular path. I mean, if everything is downloaded in my root directory, shouldn’t it just be /files? Or if the path is valid as was shown in the error message, do I need an htdocs folder since it shows /htdocs/files ?

Thanks,
Michael

Re: 1and1 and trouble

For the file directory, it’s looking for the File directory path that you’ve set in your preferences, under the advanced tab. It needs to be in relation to your server’s root, so you don’t want it to be the htdocs root. This folder is specific for uploading files — under your Content tab there’s a Files subtab. Textbook might also be of help to you (I’ve linked directly to the Advanced Preferences subtab). It also explains about the permissions that I failed to look up earlier; they should be set to 777.

Re: 1and1 and trouble

Only worry about the filedirectory, if you want to actually use file uploads. Otherwise feel free to ignore it.

About the clean urls – have you checked if they work? The test we do is not 100% (i.e. it can show an error, even though clean urls work, due to certain functions being disabled etc.). There is an faq entry that deals with clean urls/404s. In case they are not working, start with the sugestions there.

Re: 1and1 and trouble

Hi Wahlin!

Ok. We are 1&1 users still 3 years ago.

Here an example of .htaccess files we used :

DirectoryIndex index.php index.html
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteBase /
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
 RewriteEngine On
 RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f [OR]
 RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d
 RewriteRule ^(.+) - [PT,L]
 RewriteRule ^(.*) index.php
</IfModule>
#php_value register_globals 0

Be careful about path to “files” and “tmp” directories from the “preferences” tab.

You have to delete web in this path if it exists. Here the path you must to use in you case :

/homepages/16/d93682108/htdocs/files

(Assuming your site is on the root).

Be sure to give CHMOD 777 to this directories with your FTP client.

All must be all right.

Cheers,
