Numbered links to articles of the same kind (custom field relation)

I have to supplement my clients site with an extra option: On the “individual article” pages he wants a navigation linking to those pages that are assigned to the same category2 as the current one. The appearance shall be similar to this one: Numbered nav , every number representing a single link.
Hmmblmb, I don’t get any tag to work for it like I intend. And I can’t use jk_image (above snippet from a screenshot made with it) as it requires clean URLs. There’s enough unused custom fields to give the articles their own numbers, and I’d very much like to learn how to achieve this with on-board means, but a plugin for sure would do the job with less hassle for the non-webproof client. The only plugin I’m aware of doesn’t work with 4.0.4 as of now. So, any tip on how to achieve the outlined is very much appreciated, no matter if by plug or by hand.

Re: Numbered links to articles of the same kind (custom field relation)

I tried article_custom, related article and article, all of them on the page, then even in a form, but at best it resulted in the output of one single link. (Worst was breaking the layout by ignoring the form I set.) The only solution I figured out so far works with chh_related_articles (which functioned instantly, exactly the way I intended. Strange, that I do not get the on-board tags working.). But that way the current page has to be mentioned separately:

<txp:chh_related_articles relation="custom_3" form="__numbers_please" sortby="custom_4" sortdir="asc" /><br />
You're currently viewing <txp:custom_field name="sort_order" />.

(In between I had to use cat2 for a different object so I changed the relation to a custom field, but cat2 is free again now. edit: definitely occupied)

Which TxP tag can be used (in conjunction with a custom field containing the numbers) to output a line of numbers like above, where the current article is listed neatly among the others?
