[wiki] Install Textile support for the wiki?
Hi,
I found a MediaWiki extension that allows use of Textile markup instead of default wikitext markup. AlternateSyntaxParser
Given the version number it seems quite new and probably hasn’t been extensively used. Maybe as a trial it could be installed on a page-by-page basis on Textbook? (Hm, wonder if there’s an automatic wikitext2textile converter… if this parser exists, it surely can’t be that much harder…)
I have some experience with MediaWiki so I’d be happy to e.g. communicate with the extension author about bugs and so forth.
cheers,
Brianna
ps> I’m not sure whose decision it was, if anyone’s, but I find it kinda silly that the Textbook disallows anon edits AND makes it so hard to sign up for accounts… why not just let people sign up their own accounts?

Re: [wiki] Install Textile support for the wiki?
I think we should move the wiki to DokuWiki like everyone was talking about when it kept breaking. I don’t know why by I just don’t like using Media wiki.
I feel people would use it more if it was in Doku Wiki and on a subdomain of textpattern.com It just seems to sit there doing nothing at the moment.
Dokuwiki has the added advantage of integrating with the PunBB user database which makes it even easier for people to contribute. And it supports Textile!

MediaWiki has the advantage of being very powerful, and extremely stable and robust. To break it, you really have to go out of your way (still, it has been done once already on a simple charset matter).
There’s also the matter of converting the content.
And finally, DokuWiki seems to have trouble with MSIE 6.
Just my 2 cents devil’s advocate.

The main thing keeping us on MediaWiki at the moment is the existing content. There is nothing to convert the content between wiki’s on an automated basis.
I don’t know that it being on textpattern.com or running different software will make more people use it. It’s not like wikipedia has a problem with contributions. I’d love to move it to textbook.textpattern.com. I think that makes a lot of sense.
As far as anon edits go, I don’t htink we have enoug eyes on textbook to be on a constant lookout for spam. I’m open to ways to improve the getting account experience though. The current method was just something quick that got put int place when textbook started but it seems to worfk fine.
As far as the plugin goes it seems that it can be used on a page by page basis so we could always start out using it that way in case of bugs etc.
Brianna if you want to help out drop me a line and we can coordinate something.

Perhaps this makes less sense but you could keep the old wiki up as long as needed while we move the content to textbook.textpattern.com
I just think for speed and ease of use people will start posting a lot more how-to’s if they know it’s something that gets traffic, where they can use Textile and their forum account. I run a DokuWiki install for a non-profit and i just enjoy using it far more then MediaWiki.
Just an idea.

I have no love for Mediawiki. The idea of tying the forum and wiki accounts together is very enticing because it would make access to the wiki easier. What’s required to do that?

That’s because it’s perfect. :)
Seriously, though, the only devils advocate thing I can add, which has been said many times before but this is definitely the last time, is multilingual support.
After that, a slow, manual migration of the valued content shouldn’t be a big deal.

Er…. MediaWiki has pretty good multilingual support. What’s the specific functionality that’s desired? (or some examples anyway)
cheers,
Brianna

Check out Doku wiki’s multi-language homepage
See this for PunBB user support
