Live has problems. Debugging OK.

This is partly Textpattern and may be partly Textdrive. I have had intermittent problems with my texty template demo site since I put it up. When I am in ‘debugging’ mode I rarely get any problems, but when I am in ‘live’ mode it seems like the browser doesn’t quite manage to fetch the whole page and I get a wierd view of it.

I thought this should be the other way round, because debugging makes more queries so causes more activity so should take longer. But ‘live’ takes longer for pages to load, when they do load correctly. Of course, with debugging turned off, I can’t post any results!

I have it set to ‘testing’ mode at present. Note that I never get any errors displayed, just wierd rendering of pages.

Re: Live has problems. Debugging OK.

Well, the queries remain the same, actually. All that testing/debugging does is determine whether you get error messages and tag trace displayed, otherwise they are hidden.

Can you describe “weird” versus what it is supposed to look like? Perhaps a screenshot of the two?

Re: Live has problems. Debugging OK.

Hi Mary, working round the clock these day?! Here is how the About page looks at the moment. I just switched to live mode and got this. If you go to this page you won’t see the same page but get an idea of how it should look

Re: Live has problems. Debugging OK.

I was just testing and getting the same problems. But when I set Send “Last-Modified” header? to No, it has been fine and I haven’t seen it happen since. Does this explain why Debugging mode is fine too? ie, because it is always different from what is in my cache, I get a fully refreshed page. And the wierd pages were somehow not fully cached or something?

Anyway, fingers crossed, it seems to be working fine now :-)

Re: Live has problems. Debugging OK.

That feature is actually turned off when the site isn’t live. What browser(s) were you experiencing the problem in?

Re: Live has problems. Debugging OK.

IIRC, It’s a bug with certain versions of mod_deflate, php, 304 and keep-alive.
In textpattern/lib/txplib_misc.php uncomment the line that says:

# header('Connection: close');

This will close the connection and thus work around the bug.

Or simply turn off sending of last-modified headers in preferences, if that’s acceptable to you.

Re: Live has problems. Debugging OK.

I was just testing again and could find no problem in IE6 or FF2, just in Opera 8.5 which is my usual browser. I’ve now removed the #, Sencer, set last-modifed headers at ‘yes’ and it all seems to be working fine now. Thank you!
