Forgive my RSS noobishness!

I was under the impression TXP had XML feeds already rock and rolling upon installation. Maybe it did, maybe I broke it unintentionally.

I only have a basic understanding of RSS to begin with, only started playing with it over the past few days, so not sure if I’m even testing this the right way, but I plugged my site (www.slowbox.org) into weblog.com’s feed validator (http://www.weblogs.com/feedvalidator.html) and it gave me the NOT a valid feed message.

Does this mean the rss/atom feeds that I thought TXP had running on my blog are NOT working? Or am I testing this the wrong way?

…In my TXP “sidebar” form and here is the only feed related code I could find:

<a href=”<txp:site_url />?rss=1&amp;section=article”><span>RSS 2.0 Articles</span></a>
<a href=”<txp:site_url />?atom=1&amp;section=article”><span>Atom 1.0 Articles</span></a>

…. Doesnt really mean much to me, but thought it might help to post. If anyone out there can either tell me an easy way to troubleshoot/test these feeds or explain to me a few lines of code that works, I’d much appreciate it.

Try Textbook here and have a read of other parts of the site, seeing as you’re new.

Thanks for a response.

Thats the textbook entry I had read through and tried before I posted. Before posting I also ran a dozen different searches on the forums for feeds/rss related help, but only found people’s specific issues.

I guess I was hoping to find an “About Textpattern’s RSS/ATOM XML Feeds” type of info. Since I’m not a programmer, analyzing the TXP functions that should make this happen doesnt work for me. I picked TXP cause I didnt want to worry about that kind of thing. :P

Meh, oh well

Re: Forgive my RSS noobishness!

Sorry, I don’t know the ins and outs of RSS either and have found that Textbook usually has enough information for me to make things work. It’s always my first call with a tag problem cos I can never remember the exact syntax. I’m sure someone will have an answer for you soon cos TXP software and community is great, as you’ll find out before long.

I just use this in the head of the document:
<txp:link_feed_link label=“atom” format=“link” flavor=“atom” title=“Atom feed />
<txp:link_feed_link label=“rss” format=“link” flavor=“atom” title=“RSS feed />

It produces a link in the address field.

Re: Forgive my RSS noobishness!

The section you are using for RSS, for example “news” section, must be set to syndicate=on, otherwise a feed is not created.

Re: Forgive my RSS noobishness!

It looks like your RSS feed works fine, but your Atom feed does not.

Could you change your Production mode to Debugging and post any error messages you get?

Re: Forgive my RSS noobishness!

Thanks again for responses.

I double checked and I DO have syndicate turned on for everything except the contact/about pages.

I currently have debugging mode ON. No errors appear. (i’ve left it on in case you would like to check)

… I’m using the Google news reader atm, and while I CAN subscribe to my RSS feed, it does NOT report any updated entries that I add.

Also, I’m not running any feed related plug-ins. Just a stock TXP + template + couple little plugins that came with template.

Is there any code I could post here that might reveal the issue with either the RSS or Atom feeds?

Re: Forgive my RSS noobishness!

As I wrote above, I just have this in the head of my pages:
<txp:link_feed_link label=“atom” format=“link” flavor=“atom” title=“Atom feed />
<txp:link_feed_link label=“rss” format=“link” flavor=“rss” title=“RSS feed />
I havent’ specified any section although my syndicated articles are in a section. But everything works fine for me. You could try it.

Re: Forgive my RSS noobishness!

I know the problem. You have no section named “articles”.

Re: Forgive my RSS noobishness!

right you are… =D

<a href=”<txp:site_url />?rss=1&amp;section=articles”><span>RSS 2.0 Articles</span></a>

I didnt realize in the feed link that the “section=articles” is reffering to the section name I created.

I thought it was some internal TXP thingy!

….sigh!! big thanks.

I bet if there was some trick with TXP that would make that section=“whatever section you are viewing” then future code noobs like me would have an easier time. automatic for the people! cheers!

It does/will: <txp:feed_link />. On the front page it would include articles from all sections set to be syndicated. On a section page, it would include articles from that section.
