Bristol RNA Club

http://bristolrnaclub.org

Not quite done… proper content is missing and I need to clean up the code + make the best possible effort for accessibility.

Any feedback on the design?

One thing I’ve noticed when accessing it from my work laptop is that it’s all very monochromatic. Would ther pic in its original colours look better?

Re: Bristol RNA Club

Personally, I quite like the monochromatic feel. But perhaps it is that which draws my eyes to the sponsor logos which are more colourful. Perhaps if you put them in the right hand column, or alternatively separated them from the content with a big margin, they woulnd’t be so distracting. Of course if you want people to click on them they are perfectly positioned.

I also find your text a bit hard to scan. eg the inaugural meeting page has 4 different left-alignments in the main text, plus bold, plus the spacing doesn’t make sense, imho. The author should be closer to the appropriate description because as it is now it is just as prominent as the description and could be associated with the text above or below it.

Re: Bristol RNA Club

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll try adding the same photo in a slightly washed out colour and a full colour version too, to compare all. I’ll also add colour to the RNA bit of the logo.

You’re right about text alignment on the inaugural meeting page. I’ve attempted to tidy it up. I actually spent an hour yesterday trying to add a border around the date and location but it just wouldn’t happen.

Re: Bristol RNA Club

Should look more colourful now. I saved pics at 4-8 colours for effect.

Re: Bristol RNA Club

Better. I thought you had used the original bridge photo for your colour scheme with the fading light green, under ‘home’ and the right column, coming directly from it. Now that you’ve got different colour photos on each page, may I suggest you put a border around the photos, and possibly the sponsor logos too, all using the same colour. This should help consistency of colour scheme. It will also help the Links page photo look better, imho. Just my opinion of course. I don’t speak with any authority as I am not a great graphical artist or anything!

Re: Bristol RNA Club

zero, I had used an existing theme, yes, but the ‘client’ (my brother) didn’t particularly like it. Also, I changed host — clean URLs didn’t work on netfirms.com — so I thought I’d start from scratch.

I’m not a big fan of borders around images. Apart from the one on the Links page where you have RNA bits and pieces floating around a white background pics have their own borders.

I’m still not happy how copy is formatted on the Inaugural Meeting. A solid border to the left of the body would help, I think, but I can’t get the div’s BG colour or background image to span all the way down – it’s height is determined by how much content there is in the main body.

Re: Bristol RNA Club

Here’s how to style the copy to be closer to web standards, using Inaugural Meeting. I’ve used a kind of shorthand that I’m sure you can figure out.

h1 Inaugural Meeting
h2 Our first meeting with etc…
h3 Date and time <span 29 Mar /span> /h3>
h3 Location <span Bristol /span> /h3>
ol li Regulation of…Factor <span Dawid N… /span> /li>
li Making sense…SAGE <span Rebecca… /span> /li>
etc /ol>
Final h3 and p are OK

Then you style the h and spans accordingly. You can but a br before the speaker to get it on a separate line if you like.

I hope that helps.
