The most of the rest of those rules are the actual Txp rules. The first three you only add if you need them (by default they are commented out – #). One of the rewrite rules commented out (which doesn’t ship with Txp) appears to be for tagging. It probably works. Uncomment it and you can see if it does.
Those Expires rules should have been wrapped in an IfModule tag, so that it doesn’t cause the problems you had.

actually i couldnt get it to work on my current host or textdrive, i will have to use a less complicated template/htaccess file for now.
