wet_opensearch: Add OpenSearch auto detection to your site

wet_opensearch adds an OpenSearch template to your site as specified by the OpenSearch specification.

Additionally, it contains a tag which renders the necessary markup allowing search clients like modern browsers to discover your on-site search facility. Visitors can easily add the site search to their browser’s list of search providers.

Documentation and download.

Re: wet_opensearch: Add OpenSearch auto detection to your site

The add-on only does HTML search auto-discovery via OpenSearch Description documents. This can easily be hand coded.

However if the add-on could do OpenSearch responses it would be a killer! Pretty please add support for Atom OpenSearch responses?

Which response format would you use?

Atom 1

See my post above. I just edited it.

Internet Explorer 7 can show OpenSearch responses inside the browser with a easily customized, default search result page. You may als submit OpenSearch Descriptions of OS respons capable searches to A9. OpenSearch was inveted by A9 for this purpose, but has been extended an adopted by Microsoft and later Mozilla to do the HTML search auto-discoveries. Firefox cannot display the OpenSearch responses, but will fall back to the HTML search.

Are you going to add Atom OpenSearch responses to your add-on, wet? I hope so. I do not think I am familiar enough with Textpattern to make it work myself.

Maybe I’m to ignorant, but I cannot see any advantage of this response for a human reader…

Re: wet_opensearch: Add OpenSearch auto detection to your site

There are two arguments for OpenSearch responds over HTML:

  • Users may subscribe to the OpenSearch responds in any Atom 1 or RSS 2 capable feed reader.
  • User agents (browsers, feed readers, web services, search engines, ..) may style search results pages according to their own, or their users preferences. (Users get search results in a familiar environment.)

Re: wet_opensearch: Add OpenSearch auto detection to your site

I could do this as a paid-for plugin, as I’d have no other use for it – neither personally nor for a client. Drop me a message if you’d like to get in touch.

Alternativelly, please post a plugin request over there as it might be of interest to somebody else.
