Trouble with site_admin sending emails to gmail

Has anybody encountered issues with sendmail working with gmail? I’ve not had this problem before, but I have a client sight running 4.03 that is not correctly sending new authors with gmail addresses their login info, nor is it properly resending old authors with gmail addresses new passwords.

Any thoughts on how to test or change this behavior?

What kind of problem, exactly?
Gmail email accounts are just that – email accounts. There’s nothing special about sending email to gmail account holders.

Re: Trouble with site_admin sending emails to gmail

voiceofra,
That’s what I would think too.
I tested on other email addresses (non gmail) and had success, but the gmail addresses were not being sent the appropriate login info though the notification (top left) suggested that it was. I’ve checked junk mail too, to no avail. Very weird.

Re: Trouble with site_admin sending emails to gmail

Do you have access to mail server log files to check if it was rejected immediately upon delivery?

Ruud,
I can get access. I will. What should I look for?

Re: Trouble with site_admin sending emails to gmail

It should show if the gmail mail server accepted the email or if not, what the reason was for rejecting the email.

Re: Trouble with site_admin sending emails to gmail

Hi.

Blockquoted from a post I made in Google Apps Group back in January:

I’m having problems from time to time. The e-mails sent through the
contact form silently fail and never arrive.

WHAT I EXPECTED TO HAPPEN:
I have a very simple contact form that usually works fine, as expected.
Visitors fill in the form (e-mail, name and message), hit the “Send”
button and the e-mail is sent to my account
([email address]) and a copy to the visitor’s e-mail.

WHAT HAPPENED:
But from time to time, it starts to fail silently: the visitors fill in
the form fields, hit the “Send” button, they receive a message that the
e-mail has been sent (and even, they receive a copy of the e-mail in
their mail account).
But, the problem is: I don’t receive the e-mail. The e-mail never
arrives.

I have contacted my hosting provider (nuthost.com) and complained about
this with them.
They said that the problem is at Google but I have my doubts.
Let my quote you an e-mail from my hosting provider:

Quoted e-mail:

2007-01-01 17:39:05 1H1TvL-0000rO-Ck [email address] R=lookuphost defer (-1): host lookup did not complete 2007-01-02 01:30:11 1H1TvL-0000rO-Ck [email address] R=lookuphost

2007-01-02 14:44:21 1H1ngJ-0004I0-66 => [email address] R=lookuphost
T=remote_smtp H=ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM [209.85.133.114]

Everything seems to indicate that problems come up with gmail’s name
resolution, and these are temporary errores at the remote server.
The MX entry for ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM has changed its IP address several
times.”

(End of quote)

The bug is hard to reproduce because it happens from time to time.
Suddenly, the contact form starts to fail.
My hosting provider says that the problem is related to Google. But I
have my doubts.

But you can try to use the contact form:

1. Contact form: http://www.efectoscluster.com.ar/contacto/
2. Fill the fields and hit “Enviar”.

Additional info:
- this is the contact form I use:
http://forum.textpattern.com/viewtopic.php?id=19823
It is a plug-in for the Textpattern CMS (www.textpattern.com).

I used to have a problem with Gmail/Zem Contact Reborn (pay attention, ruud, if you are there ;) ). From time to time Mails sent through ZCR wouldn’t ever arrive to the Gmail account.
Where they have been lost? I never knew!! Maybe in a place in our Galaxy between Earth and Alpha Centauri.

Re: Trouble with site_admin sending emails to gmail

Hmm.. well if the MX record changes, that doesn’t mean it can’t be resolved, so that doesn’t really explain this problem.

One possible cause would be that the DNS, used by the mailserver to perform the lookup, refuses to do recursive lookups for the mailserver, yet does allow recursive lookups from some other servers. In that case the lookup from your mailserver would only succeed if another server using that DNS also did that same lookup a bit earlier (the result would cached and no recursion is be needed for subsequent lookups). But then you would have similar problems sending mail to other recipients.

From time to time Mails sent through ZCR wouldn’t ever arrive to the Gmail account.
Where they have been lost? I never knew!!

It would help to see mail server logs for those lost emails. If mail delivery to gmail never succeeded, I’d assume they bounced back to the user that sent the email, probably your_login_name@your.server.com

Re: Trouble with site_admin sending emails to gmail

I got this from Dreamhost:

We just discovered a problem with the email server that handles outgoing
email to gmail (among others) and are working to fix it now. If the
messages you’re sending to gmail are disapearring or delayed then that we
should have the issue fixed and they should go out by tomorrow. If they
were bouncing or erroring out then it may be a different issue. In that
case if you could show me the full headers of a bounced message, or the
error message you’re getting then I can investigate further.
